Trouble eating and drinking when sitting.

Recommended Posts

I was banded this past Wednesday (05/03) and I have started to have some trouble drinking and eating when I am sitting down. I can stand and have no problems with mushies, but sitting down makes even Water tough to go down. My doctor's suggested diet has liquids for only 24 - 48 hours post op. Any one experienced this?

liquids should be at least a good week. The next week you can have creamy liquids, the 3rd week mushies and then you gradually add in stuff like fish. Your body needs to heal. Plus you are still swollen and that is most likely the problem.

Small, very small, sips of clear fluids.

If you do a search for post op diets you will find lots of info that people have shared.

Congratulations, susan

Gene, as you can see I had the same doctor as Susan so the same from me but I can't believe he did not put you on post-op restrictions. Your stomach does have to heal and mine was swollen and bloated for about four or five days. I am two weeks out and just today started mushies. Let me know if I can help any other way.

Gene, I'd suggest full liquids for a while till everything settles down. I agree that swelling is the problem, plus sitting down compacts everything, and until the swelling goes down and you drop some weight, you will need to be careful with your new band. In the food Forum, there is a Sticky with the Food Stages. You need to check with your doc, but just because doc says Clear Liquids for 48 hours, doesn't mean you should jump to, say, tuna on day 3. Or day 6 for that matter. Listen to your body/band and slow it down. How you doin' since lunchtime?

The trouble eating and drinking while sitting has gone away. I guess I was swollen. Thanks fof all the advice.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
