ahhhhhhhhhhhh... solids

Recommended Posts

I am officially 5 weeks post-op and moved from soft foods to solid foods... FINALLY! :) It was perfect timing because I was invited to a luncheon with a group of friends and they decided on a place called Legal Seafood. I don't eat beef or pork so I was happy with the seafood focus but a bit leary of eating solids.

I skipped the roll and butter and appetizer and decided on scallops (cooked over a wood fire) and snow peas. :hungry: The portions were not large and I ate slowly and felt satisfied, but not stuffed, after I was finished. Afterwards, I did some shopping and walking and did not feel hungry until 7:15 PM. :clap2:

Since I won't have a first fill for another 3 full weeks and have not felt restriction since post-op day five, I am taking it one day at a time and learning to determine physical from emotional hunger. The dietician told me to shoot for a 6 on a hunger scale of 1-10 with 10 being stuffed. Since I'm used to eating until I am 10+ on a hunger scale ;) , this is proving quite a challenge.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the first fill gives me at least SOME restriction. Thanks to everyone here for their wonderful support.

Thank you! I stick to the guidelines and haven't had any problems. I'm looking forward to the first fill on 5/25.

Oh, please do share, was eating solids a truly wonderful experience? I miss chewing. I have been on liquids since April 10 and I so miss food. I can't wait to move to mushies.

Hang in there Susan. We will make it. I have three days to go before mushies. It will be so good. I love fish of just about any kind but I am looking for someone to tell me about some other kind of mushies that they have had besides mashed potatoes.

Susan, your post made me chuckle. I remember feeling like I'd give my left arm for a big steak! At the end of week two, I saw my Dr and told him how hungry I was so he let me progress to mushies. That first bite of soft food I had was cottage cheese and you'd have thought I was... well, all I could do was say mmmm and moan a lot. LOL! That was THE BEST cottage cheese I'd EVER tasted!

Sally I think there are some lists of mushie foods in the food forum. Check out the posts there. I always recommend Gorton's grilled fish fillets (lemon pepper or garlic butter). Microwave in 7 mins. Yum. Some of my other favorites were oatmeal, cottage cheese, bean with bacon Soup, tuna with a couple of tablespoons of fat free thousand island dressing, peas and carrots (frozen, boiled until very soft), and canned peaches (lite syrup).

Hi Sally Jo!! I think we might just make it. I go to the doctor for my post-op on Monday and am keeping my fingers crossed that he puts me on mushies. I think he did with one of the other LBT'ers that went to him. I honestly don't think I could do 4 post-op weeks of liquids like many are required to do.

PhotoNut, I can just imagine how heavenly those first bites of mushies are, lol. I have visions of taking that first bite and confetti and balloons falling from the skies. I can't imagine any experience being better than one bite of mushies after weeks of just liquids.

Hi Susan,

Your comment truly made me laugh. After 5 weeks post-op and one week pre-op of modified diets, it did feel great to eat some solid food. To be honest, I craved veggies and salads more than anything else.

Because I have no restriction and no fill as yet, I think it's VERY easy to "go wild" and really sink your teeth into REAL food. LOL. I started the day with my usual 4 oz of lite ricotta cheese and then had scallops and snow peas for lunch. I figured the firmness of the snowpeas and the softness of the scallops were a good match for a first solid meal. I really wasn't too hungry for dinner so I settled on a 240 calorie Lean Cuisine meal.

About 45 minutes ago a had a REAL salad with sliced carrots, mixed lettuces, a 3 oz can of tuna fish, a few raisins and some fat free Salad Dressing. I ate it very slowly and so far, so good. I have lots of things I want to eat after 6 weeks of no solids but have to control myself and treat myself to varied meals instead of binging.

I did 2 weeks of full fluids post-op and then 3 weeks of soft. Since you can have fish on the soft diet, I did well and didn't feel deprived... just limited in my food selections. Hang in there... solids ARE coming your way soon.

Have you ever seen that commercial where the woman is in the shower washing her hair and she's saying, "Yes.. Yes!!.. YES!!"?

Yeah, you get the idea.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
