Food No Longer Is Appealing

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else have issues with the thought of eating sometimes sounding gross? Or after you've eaten, even thinking about it makes you want to get sick? I'm having appetite issues, taste issues, food not sounding good...or if something starts out sounding good as soon as I take a few bites it's no longer good to me and the idea of trying to continue to eat makes me want to throw up.

Normally I don't, but when I'm sick or recovering from surgery I completely lose my appetite. When that happens, I regress back to Protein Shakes temporarily just to be sure I get the necessary Vitamins and Protein until my appetite comes back.

I do have that problem some days; usually in the morning. If I can't stomach the thought of solid food, I have a Protein Shake. Sometimes I'll feel that way throughout a day, but it isn't often. And I don't really know what triggers it.

For me, that's a sign of the Green Zone...the band will make you "Not Hungry", but you have not eaten anything...the band sends a signal to your brain telling it you are full, and do not need to eat anymore...but you are not! Yet, just as though you just finished a Thanksgiving dinner, you cannot imagine eating anything else...

In other words, you are not interestred in food....NOT HUNGRY! I get this 24/7, because the band is there 24/7...some people just get this in between meals...I don't. I have it all the time....

I can care less about food 85% of the time....my brain says I don't need it because I'm full, satisfied, whatever you want to call it....

You should see me grocery shopping...nothing in the entire store appeals to me, except for the silliest little things....

I have an appetite, I don't obsess over food like I did before my band. I also have changed to foods that I enjoy. I no longer enjoy greasy burgers, fries, chips & dips, etc... They don't appeal to me. I get excited about a nicely grilled chicken breast with sauteed veggies. Yummy!

There is very little that excites me about food anymore! I am happy that my husband is a good cook and doesn't mind doing so for himself. Being an empty nester, I don't have o worry about feeding kiddos either! So, I eat what I want when I feel like it. I do an awful lot of fish, because I don't really like much else, anymore.

Like ajtexas said I don't even want to eat burgers or that stuff anymore!

I had it when I was on the mushy/pureed foods. Every single food I tried, after I had it, the thought of more made me nauseous. And absolutely to the tastebuds being off.

Although I have found myself "mourning" some foods, I'm finally coming to terms with the fact that this is my new life. Last night I had a cup of cream of Tomato Soup and I savored every sip. It felt like the most delicious meal I have ever eaten.

I can relate to the point you raised on food not being as enjoyable after a few mouthfuls. I've felt there us a disparity between anticipation and enjoyment of actually eating over the past 12 months since being banded.

i can be so excited sit down and eat after cooking/going to a fancy restaurant/special occasions, and after even a single mouthful or two, I may feel over it. (not all the time, but this does happen a few times a week)

As much as that feels like a bit of a let down, I remind myself this is what I wanted from the Lapband, a sense of satisfaction and an ability to walk away from food if I don't need or want it. I know I haven't eaten a reasonable sized portion and dont fancy and alternative, I'll wrap it up and try again later, or if its really not something I want, I'll throw it away ASAP.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
