Am I Doing Something Wrong?

Recommended Posts

My surgery was Feb. 25, 2013. So far I have lost over 30 lbs., but I have not had a fill yet. The first opportunity to have a fill, I opted out because I was losing steadily. This past week I visited the surgeon and he thought I should not have a fill, since I am still losing weight. He seemed concerned that I wasn't eating enough.

I track everything I eat, keeping track of calories, fat, and Protein intake. I always have between 60-70 grams of Protein, and in the range of 800 calories, sometimes a little more, or less. I occasionally get hungry, but not regularly. I take Vitamins daily and Calcium supplements twice a day.

My Breakfast is usually 1/2 c. of fat-free cottage cheese, or an egg, soft boiled, or fried in pam, and apple sauce. For lunch I like 1/2 c. greek yogurt with fruit on the bottom (80 cal.). Sometimes I'll go out and have chicken salad, or 1/2 a chicken wrap. dinner is 1 1/4 ounce of solid protein, a vegetable, and fruit. If I need more protein, I have a Protein shake with skim milk. I like what I'm eating right now, but don't mind changing things up a little, especially if I need to. I live alone so I don't have to worry about cooking for someone else.

I'm gathering that the surgeon wants me to eat more, so my weight loss will slow down, giving reason to have a fill, to restrict my eating and increase weight loss again. He is wondering why I needed the band to do this, and all I can say is that I tried WW numerous times and was never able to get below 205, and I have broken through that barrier, finally.

So, what are the opinions? As long as I'm meeting my nutritional needs and not getting very hungry, should I be concerned? Any suggestions?

I do under 1000 calories a day, and keep the Protein between 85 and 90 grams (eat a lot of fish fillets.) I just saw my APRN yesterday, and he had some minor concerns that I could eat more if I wanted to, but he felt that I was nutritionally on a very sound track. He also advised NO fill, since it wouldn't have accomplished anything for me at this stage.

So long as you are getting enough nutrients and protein, I suspect you are doing quite well. But, a nutritionist would be the best one to advise you. Congrats on the weight loss!

I think he's truly concerned that you're not getting enough Protein and other nutrients. Giving you another fill could make you eat even less and that may not be good for you?

You must be one of the lucky ones who feel satisfied with less food right from the git-go. I'm envious.

Wouldn't hurt much if you threw in a cheese stick here or there to up your caloric intake. You may run into a plateau if your body decides you're trying to starve it. But, no need to worry just yet.

I would keep doing what you are doing until you decide that you need that fill. I only say that because I was also like you, pleased with the restriction my empty band was giving me, with a loss of 2 pounds each week. I met all my nutritional needs, just had bloodwork done which was excellent, and was enjoying everything I ate. I followed all my surgeon's post op directives to the letter in terms of reintroducing my foods in stages.

I didn't want a fill, but did not wish to be viewed as a non-compliant patient. My surgeon is quite authoritarian and is not open to hearing a patient's take on things. So I went and got my first fill last week, very reluctantly.

Right now I have way too much restriction and cannot even get down any of the healthy. protein-rich, real foods I was basing my diet around. But I'm going to give it a couple of days; it may be once the fill/band settles down I'll be able to reincorporate my salads, Beans, eggs, etc.

But I greatly regret not cancelling my fill appointment last week. I was doing just fine without it, and now I'm hating the way I have to eat (for the moment; again, this may change as the fill settles down.)

That said, it is providing me with a rapid weight loss. There's at least that benefit.

Thank you all for your response. Since I am feeling great, losing weight, and getting my required nutrients, I will continue with what seems to be working for me. I will keep trying different kinds of solid Protein. Low-fat string cheese sounds like a good idea to add to my lunch. I must become a little more adventurous. chicken and tuna will become boring after a while.

One reason I am being so cautious about what I eat is there are so many foods that were triggers in the past. Since bread has always been a weakness, why reintroduce it to my diet if I don't need it?

I also followed my post-op instructions to the letter. When I was given information before surgery, it all went into a binder to I could refer back easily and keep track of everything. Just getting to the point of having surgery was an ordeal, that I don't want to do anything that will cause me to fail.

I'm sorry you aren't comfortable with your fill. Hopefully this will get better.

I had surgery May 2. Lost 18 pounds so far. But now I'm able to eat a little more than I would think I should. Getting a full next week. I hope they can find that happy spot so I continue losing. I haven't weighed myself since Monday because I'm afraid I didn't lose anymore. It's definitely true what they say. The dr put the band around your stomach. Not your mouth and brain.

Ugh trying to respond to above post, I was banded on 5/7 and I know I can eat more than I should. I am having trouble figuring this out. I get no soft stop feeling. Sometimes I recognize "the sigh" but most of the time I don't. I get hiccups most every time I eat. It is just a few but someone told me that is because I ate too much. Can someone tell me, does the food we eat go through the band as we eat or is it all in the pouch and goes slowly? I have only lost about 3 pounds since 5/7. Compared to my previous life I eat WAY less so you would think this would be going quicker?

BJC do what works for you. If your current diet works, why change it. I have a friend who has had the band for almost a year now, never had a fill and has lost over 100 pounds (117 to be exact). She often asks if she should get a fill and I say. Can you go 3-4 hours without feeling hungry? Do you eat more that 1 cup of food a meal? If you can go 3-4 hour without feeling hungry and you are only eating 1 cup of food or less then you do not need a fill.

And it sounds like you are doing great with what you have. Keep it up!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
