Any idea how to get over a plateau?

I have lost 31 lbs in 2 months after Lap Band surgery and have hit my first major plateau. Is there any tricks that anyone uses to get over the hump?

Are you logging your food? Is it possible you need another fill? Are you exercising regularly?

A major plateau may be different for everyone but for me, it's 2 months. And you're only 2 months out and you've lost 30. Many would love to have your success. One week does not make a major plateau. Just keep eating fewer calories than you burn and it will happen in time. Be patient.

If you're exercising you may be replacing fat with muscle. It will show up as inches lost and won't appear on the scale.

I log everything, I exercise daily, and I just had a fill on 4/22. I guess my body is just catching up, because I have lost 2 pounds since yesterday. Thanks for the tips.

Keep on eye on your weight 30 days ago, if you weigh less you aren't on a plateau. Personally, I lose in bursts. and my weight will bounce around after a burst of loss, before dumping more fat again.

When ever I need a boost, I do low carb, like really low carb for a few weeks. I actually do the low carb thing all the time now. However, when I used to count calories, limiting my carbs always gave me the boost I needed. I talk about low carb eating on my lap band blog. I can see your point. I am new to this, so I guess any plateau is major for me. Thanks for the advice.

New or old, anytime the scale stops moving we start worrying. You aren't alone in this, it happens to all of us.

Plateaus are B-------ches. I had the same problem. After two years banded I had lost about 50 lbs. That's when I hit my big one. So I asked doctors and searched the computer for answers. I'm a gym fanatic. But everyone told me to change up my exercise regimen. Do different things. At first, I wasn't convinced. Then after about 3 weeks, I began to see results. Now every 3 to 4 days, I do something different, but also try to do as much cardio as I am able. I also do weights, not real heavy weights, but enough to challenge myself a little. Since then I've lost about 30 pounds more. That was my answer. Hope it helps you.

I was also told to change up my workouts. Two people also told me if you do to much cardio you stop burning fat and burn muscle. They both told me to do 45 minutes and intervals. One trainer also told me not to go to gym every day and I should do some cardio outside. I am so confused.

I think cardio is good, but that too you need to change up. I may do eliptical one day, doing various levels during the workout. Then the next day, I might do treadmill - again doing various levels. I don't think cardio is bad, just don't keep doing the same routine every day.

The best way to get over a plateau is to add more fat to your diet for awhile. When we lose weight our bodies will naturally adjust and thus, a plateau. You need to add more fat for about a week to trick your body, then go back to your normal routine and you'll start to lose again. This is what my personal trainer told me when I used to have endurance and will power lol. It worked like a charm. Don't add so much that you start to gain but if what your doing now isn't working, I promise my advice will.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

      I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
