Pre Op Diet and Post Op Diet

Recommended Posts

I really liked the suggestion that I try either of these in order to see how I handle the strict dietary requirements in order to achieve success with the lapband. Can anyone point me in the direction of what the pre op diet consists of and/or what the post op diet consists of? Thanks so much!

You will get many different versions of the post and pre op diets in this forum. Every doctor is different in what they require, but this was mine....

Two weeks prior to surgery: 1200 calories per day - low fat (they gave me a sheet on the choices of what to eat).

Two days prior to surgery - full liquids: Protein shakes, cream Soups with all solids removed, broth, juice, etc.

First 10 days of post-op: Full liquids at stated above.

Next 10 days - smooth/mushy foods: cottage cheese, yogurt, avocados, hummus, eggs, potato (not fried), Beans, etc.

More foods are added little by little through the weeks beyond this. Too much to write, but I would be happy to email you my list. PM me with your email address, and I'll send what I have. But please keep in mind, that mine most likely will not be exactly what your doctor orders. I've read so many variations; the hardest one being Clear Liquids for 4 full weeks post-op. And some doctors order a pre-op diet for many months prior to surgery. If the doctor you choose gives seminars, attend one. You will find out all that you need to know there.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
