Real Hunger vs. Head Hunger

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone . Many, many times I find myself eating just to find out that oh well, I guess I really wasn't "that hungry" . This has caused some weight gain and cycles of meaningless eating. If it wasn't or my band I would be so much heavier t this moment.

In your opinion, how do you differentiate head hunger vs. real hunger ? Any tips on how to not be a head hunger victim ?

well, for me, if i (think) i am hungry, i drink something...and if doesnt (help) i must then decide to eat or not and if i do, it is Protein and filling....i realized this on my pre op and that if someone is eating around me or its (lunch time) at work, i wanna eat...so now i am in control..i eat when i am hungry.

It's taken me over a year to figure that one out. I still find myself in the kitchen with a handful of nuts or an apple chewing away and realize I'm not really hungry, I just like food. Some people are emotional eaters, some have disorders or addictions to sugar. I just love the taste of food. And my waistline shows it.

The last couple of months I've been able to think before I eat much more than before. I stop, I listen(is it empty) to my stomach. If it's just me wanting to chew on something I drink some Water or some Water with MIO in it and return to work. I'm not always successful but I'm seeing progress. It doesn't come overnight for many of us.

Hardest part for me is not eating just because it's "time" to eat (lunch time, dinner time). I try to only eat when my stomach is screaming at me.

I wait until I'm truly, undeniably physically hungry. Stomach growling (though it can make noise that has nothing to do with hunger) and that "ok I'm starving" feeling. If I don't feel that way for 6 hours and miss a meal, no biggie. It's more important to listen to your body's natural hunger signals than to listen to a clock.

One more thing. I have no children at home so I've been able to stock my shelves with nutritious food(in lieu of fruit loops, ho hos, PB&J) if I do make a mistake and snack. Do not have chips, crackers, sugary treats, white bread, ice cream just sitting around where you can be tempted. I try not to have any of these items just sitting around where they are easily accessible.

Instead, I have fresh fruit, jerkey, walnuts, low fat cheese sticks and pickles because sometimes the last meal does not last till the next full meal.

LOL I DO have kids at home and I still don't buy that stuff or keep it in the house! Let's face it, garbage food isn't any better for them than it is for me. My logic is, why would I feed my kids crap and not myself? That wouldn't make a very good mother.

My kids love string cheese, almonds, and yogurt. They even love the SF pudding that I snack on occasionally. The only thing they snack on that I don't is granola bars because they're too much sugar for me.

EDIT: Oh and fresh fruit. My kids go through TONS of fresh fruit a week!

If only we could band our heads. I've said that many times. I eat when I'm bored so I try to stay busy. If I think I'm hungry, I ask myself "Are you bored?" and if the answer is yes I find something to do. Go for a walk, do some sewing, get online, etc. 9 times out of 10 if I do that then the "hunger" goes away.

If I do snack, like tmf I eat health snack foods.

If I am hungry and it is not meal time I drink Water. If I am still hungry after that I eat a smart (high protein) snack. I do not believe in feeling hungry or deprived.

I drink a lot of Hot Drinks like hot tea or Decaf coffee (although I try to limit coffee) when I'm feeling the hungry/not hungry battle. Typically it's soothing, something sweet to speak to my sweet tooth or it takes the edge off of an empty belly. It makes me slow down since its hot. I can take time to gauge hunger vs. boredom munchies. If that doesn't satisfy my hunger then I'll grab a small snack like a cheese stick or something. More often than not it does the trick!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
