Full liquid diet question

Recommended Posts

Hello all. I'm on my post op full liquid diet and I'm concerned about quantity. 1 cup of Soup is not filling me up at all. During this stage should I be worried about the amount? I do it feel restricted at all.

Check with your Dr. but on full liquid mine didn't tell me how much. Once I moved to mushies, it was 1/2 cup.

IMO, post-op is NOT about loosing weight....it is about healing and getting back to NORMAL.....I consumed as much as I could for nutrition and hydration.....the weight loss phase will come much later...not that you won't loose weight, but it is not the band doing it...not yet...

Thanks this is exactly my mindset my nutrionist constantly informed me do not be discouraged between now and until i get my first fill if i do not lose any weight and thats exactly what im doin because the only weight i have lost was the 12lbs of saline i was filled up with in the hospital and am currently at the weight i was on he day of surgery and im fine with that just want to heal and get a fill at the end of march and start back with my workout routines! :)

One cup may not be enough but you don't want to go guzzling 3-4 cups of anything all in one sitting. That's putting a lot of pressure on your stomach to stretch to accommodate so much Fluid. Try to stretch it out over time.

I think I consumed about 16 ozs at a time and that was enough to satisfy my appetite for a few hours.

My doc had very specific instructions during every phase...1/4 cup during full liquids 6 times per day, 1/4 - 1/2 5 times per day during mushies, 1/2 - 3/4 about 4-5 times per day and then 3/4 - 1 cup 3 times per day on solids. Everyone is different.

My full liquid period consists of the following:

3 Protein drinks and 2 Snacks.

snack choices (only ones allowed) are skim or 1% milk, light yogurt with no fruit chunks, all Clear Liquids allowed previously in first week post op, Protein Drink, strained or pureed Soup, vegetable juice, V-8 and V-8 Splash. Snacks ARE LIMITED TO 8 OUNCE SERVING SIZE.

In addition to those items, we are supposed to drink 120 ounces of non-calorie liquid. If we have something with calories, it has to be less than 15 cal per serving. Such as crystal light, etc.

You'll definitely want to check with your own doctor because they all have their own rules and ideas what works best.

As for myself, I was told to stay within a cup or less per meal from the very beginning. Not to lose weight but to get used to staying within band sized portions and (as TMF pointed out) so I didn't stretch my stomach.

Regardless of what the rest of us have done, just stick to whatever your surgeon recommends.

Best wishes.

Thanks everyone. My sheet has examples of full liquids but didn't mention amounts so that's what had confused me.

I'm 3 days post op, not feeling any restriction either, I ate a cup of beef broth yesterday. I am just taking it slow and trying to gauge when I feel satisfied, i find that if I do too much too fast I feel burpy

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
