Thinking about Lap Band surgery

Recommended Posts

I have been thinking about getting the lap band surgery done for quite some time now. I am going to a free seminar this Saturday to get some point questions answered. I guess my biggest questions are is how long will I be off work. And how does the surgery go.

I took a week off. I was at the hospital at 10 am and left by 8 pm. Best thing I have ever done!

The surgery is usually a one day outpatient procedure and they say you can go back to work in a couple of days or up to a week just depending on how you feel. The surgery usually lasts only a few hours which also depends on how you react to going under, high blood pressure ect.. for my surgery I was there at 10am and left around 5pm I didn't get into surgery til 12pm it was over by 2 and spent a few hours in recovery. I was up and walking around the next day.

By my surgery I had it on a friday morning early and was home by noon. I felt awesome right away and didn't even need the prescription painkillers. I was up and outside by monday and could have gone to work if my job was sitting at a desk or something non strenous/stressful.

People with comorbidities or other complications have to usually stay in hospital overnight

I had to spend 1 nite (Medicare requires it). WHich was good cuz I got the good pain meds! I was home by 2 pm the next day (after a barium swallow to make sure placement was correct) eating Jello and broth. I don't work, but I guess I could've gone back to a sitting job in maybe 5-7 days, a more active 1 maybe 2 weeks later.

Good luck in your decision. Best decision I ever made!

I did medicare and just that week they changed it that I didn't have to stay over night a that was Aug 2012 so I was out by 5 pm. If you have vacation take a week off you'll just feel better..its the best thing I ever did for myself...

My surgery was at 11 AM and I was discharge at 1:30 PM. I took 2 weeks off because I do heavy lifting as part of my job.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
