Bad Reflux 2 weeks after fill

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I need some advice. Banded November 22, 2005. Had my second fill on April 3 which gives me a total of 1.5 cc. Definitely more restriction. Have lost 35 lbs so far. On Wednesday of last week, and Thursday and Friday, I had terrible time sleeping due to reflux. It was so bad that it was literally coming out my nose. This went on the entire night, I know this sound gross, but I couldn't sleep at all. It was like a bloody nose at times, just pouring out. Thought it was maybe eating too close to bedtime. Called the dr. Friday morn and spoke with his nurse. She told me to go back on the prilosec, 2x a day for the next 3 days and not to eat too soon before bedtime. Okay, I did that. Sunday night wasn't too bad but I had to sleep elevated. My new restriction only allows me to eat 3-4 mouthfulls before I get a really tight feeling. And it stays for a long time. ThenI will get the hic-ups. Am I just not doing what I should....I eat slow and chew really well. It is now 3:45am and I haven't eaten since 7:00 but I have been drinking sips of Water for the past 2 hours. I am literally afraid to go to bed, that I might have the same problems.

Anyone have some suggestions. Do I just need to get used to this new fill? Thanks for your help.

I have been banded since 12/04 and have had a several fills. One time after abut 2-3 months it became too tight (don't really know why) or inflammed and I had simular symptoms. About 3 weeks ago I got a fill and it was too tight. I had the same symptoms. FYI, it is GERD. I did not know this. All the Fluid and beltching through the night makes it hard to sleep any at all and you do get afraid of night time. I have went back 3 times since the fill 3 weeks ago for un-fills. I think that the issue is that the stomach is irritated and now it has to heal. I think that if you are not careful that you can damage your stomach/esophigus and you might have to have the band removed. I currently have LESS Fluid then when I went in for the last fill and I am still VERY tight. I can get Protein drink down in the afternoon or eve and maybe a scrambled egg or some small amount of food. I can do Water most of the time.

I think that if you can get Protein Drink down and sleep without the GERD and you can do Water okay. BUT if you are having GERD and can't sleep, get an un-fill as this is serious. I still have no appitite and I was very worried that I would gain all the weight I lost since the fill (12 pounds)

Sherri is right, this is serious. You can cause damage living this way. Call your doc. Get an unfill. Banded life is not supposed to be miserable, uncomfortable, damaging, or sleepless.

Call your doc

Prilosec

Aloe Vera juice 2-3 ounces 2-3 times a day for healing

liquid diet

Banded weight loss should come with less food, better food choices, lots of Water, exercise. The American way, only with help! Weight loss shouldn't happen while being miserable. Take care of yourself. What you describe is not right, and you don't have to live this way. Let us know how you are doing!

I'm also having some gerd issues and acid in the back of my throat. I've never had indidgestion problems and it's only been four days since my fill....

Would you all also advise and unfill or recommend waiting a few more days? sleeping hasn't been a problem and I can get down some food and Protein shakes but I have this acid burning in the back of my throat all the time (since Tuesday).

I have had the same issues as you can see by my fill record. Get and un-fill and let your stomach rest. You will be glad you did!

Wow Molligirl, I've had the exact same thing these last few nights after my fill. First time was horrible, the whole nose thing waking my up and me running to the bathroom, and it has got better and better over the last couple nights. I've been kind of scared to call the doctor, but I know I should!

My best advice to you all is to go get an unfill ASAP. You don't want to cause serious damage to your esophagus...and it can happen!

I would try some Prolosec or/and Pepcid AC to see if it helps the acid. This acid is not good for the long term and can cause some issues that you don't want to have. Take care of your band. I also don't know if I would get an unfill if I can eat food and sleep but that is just me.

I agree. Get a slight unfill ASAP. There are too many LBT members who have posted about these symptoms causing serious problems when not taken care of. Just taking antacids to stop the reflux isn't going to fix the reason you're having the reflux in the first place. Get the fill adjusted, feel better and you won't have to take meds.

I think getting an unfill was good advise...but the night after I posted my first comment I slept fine and I am now on solids and doing fine...infact, not feeling much of a restriction. So...not sure what was going on, maybe just really swollen after the fill the first couple days but it's really better now...

Just an FYI,

I had surgery 3/06 and last fill in June. Just a month ago I started with the acid reflex at night and heartburn during the day. I went to my local Dr. and was given Protonix for acid reflex. I seemed to help me but was not strong enough. Last week I went in again and was given 40mgs and he also checked for gall bladder problems. I began to have a slight right pain under my rib and went to my back right behind it. Kind of an acheing pain. Not severe that I could not stand but there. When I was check he put pressure on it and that hurt. I was taken for an X-ray for gall bladder. I can't wait for results next week. He is sure it is my gall bladder. The acid reflex is much better but not totally gone. This is common with rapid weight lose patients.

I too had the same night time nightmare problems with the gross wake ups, even though I was sleeping elevated. Had the barium swallow and the light down to the band, turned out it was reflux. Dr. prescribed Pantocid, which is an India drug, must be simular to the Protonix, it had worked miracles, no more pbing and I don't have to dread going to bed at night. That is nothing to keep going on, check with your doctor.

I don't think you better mess around with this. I would get an unfill. Better safe than sorry. You sound too tight.

Good Luck.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
