I think I have enough information now to make an educated decision on the chocolate milk. That is what is great about a forum--people who are doing the same thing and who know what they are talking about are the first ones I should be asking. I did have a similar conversation with my nutritionist and she just said the rules are sugar free everything, but she couldn't tell me why. I wanted to know why. Now I do.

2muchfun asked why $50 worth of shakes. I will be drinking 2 per day for the pre-op, so that is 28 shakes right there. Then 1 a day for the first 7 after surgery. 2nd week post op will require 3 per day, so add another 21. 3rd week @2 per day. + 14. 4th week and for the rest of my life, 1 Protein shake per day. That 6 week period alone adds up to 77 shakes. My doctor said he does not wants me to rely on proper foods, but that it is so difficult to get 60-80 grams of Protein in every day that he has all of his patients do a Protein Shake for their entire life.

It sounds like every doctor is different in their instructions. Perhaps my bedtime chocolate milk will be replaced with a Protein Drink.

I would lose my mind if I had to have a shake every day. I have a hard time drinking anything even remotely thick. I almost always get in 70g of Protein a day and I'm newly banded and still learning. Once you start eating solids you might track your protein and show your doctor you are getting enough and get relief from the daily shake.

Cynthia, about the shakes? I thought I'd be drinking a lot of shakes too. So I went to some health food/vitamin store and bought this huge tub of chocolate shake stuff. I drank about 15 shakes and couldn't take it any longer. They're not gross, but I was able to get my Protein from regular food with no problem so I stopped drinking them. I still have a lot of it left over and use it when I get fills or want to go on liquids for a few days to jump a plateau. I wouldn't rush right out and buy the first barrel of shakes you see. Some of them are quite disgusting. Do a search on this site and you'll find some good advice from some folks who drink that stuff a lot.

That is great to hear. If I can get enough protein in, I will gladly forgo the shake. I already have very thinning hair on top, due to some other health issues through the years. I'm told that I can avoid losing more hair by getting enough protein. So that is a priority. Time will tell. I'm glad to hear that you get enough protein without the shakes.< /p>

There is no need to continue shakes after you start eating regular food and that is only liquid calories that you could be eating. I get 90 grams of Protein in every single day with food. I dont know of any doctor that wants you to rely on Protein Shakes for the rest of your life. What is the point of getting the band if you have to drink protein shakes forever you might as well do slim fast and forget the surgery.

Just remember the band isn't going to do all the work for you. The reason we got the band is because we made poor choices to begin with. It's not about what your giving up.

We all have had something we had a hard time giving up, but it isn't forever. Once I am down to my goal weight, I will learn a little more moderation. I ate crap and a bunch of it, that's why I gained weight. So I now have to do without until I am mentally ready to incorporate some of things that I miss in a healthy way. Don't think of it as being deprived, if anyone is more worried about what they will miss, then maybe they are not ready for this. I waited a long time to have the surgery because I depended on the food for my comfort. Its a very emotional process when it comes to food addiction. Be sure you are mentally prepared for it.

My opinion only...not trying to start trouble...lol.

Thanks for your opinion. My doctor does not want me to drink my calories, other than the exception of one Protein shake per day for the rest of my life. I will follow his suggestions as he knows what is best for me. This is the wording in his guidelines:

1- Your Goal is to get 60-80 grams of Protein every day.

2- Eat the protein part of the meal first. This ensures you don't fill up on foods that are poor sources of protein. Also, protein (mostly in the form of meat) seems to keep food in the upper stomach pouch longer.

3- Because your upper stomach pouch size is small after banding, it can be difficult to get enough protein thru food alone.You will be expected to have a protein supplemental shake every day for the rest of your life to guarantee adequate protein intake.

It should contain at least 20-30 grams of Protein per serving. The grams of total carbohydrates per serving should be less than half the amount of protein per serving. Do not look at the amount of sugar in the supplement--it is already included in the total carbohydrates. Only mix skim milk, soymilk, or Water with powdered protein. Do not add yogurt, fruit, fruit juices, or any other calorie containing foods (adds too many carbs).

So There you have it, straight from my doctor's instructions. Maybe I will be able to get enough protein without using a supplement, but I will follow his instructions until I know.

So many varying opinions...

Good advice there. I'm okay with not having the chocolate milk at night. I have researched this whole procedure for 2 years, and I have a good feel for the changes that are about to happen. I am ready, so I hope I didn't make anyone feel like I am not. 2013 is my year. I will own this, and I WILL do everything in my ability in order to be successful. I WILL DO THIS!

      Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

      2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

        I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

        I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation.
