Hi I'm Patrick and I was banded almost a year ago to this day in Peterborough

Since Jan 2013 I've lost 35.4kg / 78.04lbs / 5.6 stone

My BMI has gone from 38.5 to 25.9, so I'm still fat but close to being the ideal BMI. More importantly the weight related problems I had ( but didn't know were weight related) have gone / so goodbye snoring, asthma, acid stomach, bad legs, leaky bottom etc. So although I was on the border line of getting a band it's changed my life.

I worked a lot last year near Brno in the Czech Republic. They do a lot of gastric band surgery there and it's say 20% - 30% cheaper than having it done in the UK. However, in my opinion, getting the band fitted is only the start of it. If you're having a band fitted abroad then you MUST find a local practitioner that can provide you with regular support / filling / refilling you band. This is critical. The post op support is ultimately why I choose to have the op done in the UK rather the Cezch Republic. Knowing the Czech's a bit and the fact they 're more fastidious and careful than the Germans meant that I had absolute faith that operation in the Czech Republic would be 100% fine. Is was the post op care I was worried about. The practitioner I see does give advice to people who have had the surgery abroad too.

Having the band fitted is the easy bit really. To make the band work you have to follow strict rules and change your diet. I found I needed constant advice / support / encouragement post op. The weight doesn't really disappear until the band is set ideally for you and in my case it took 6 months to get to that point - with a lot of post op care.

I'm gone from eating meat to eating fish (because I find it difficult eating steak - which I used to adore). Be prepared for the fact that it will take time to actually start enjoying eating again - I'm still on this journey!

To anyone just about to have surgery - all the very best. I haven't regretted it and I can honestly say it's changed my life but it is tough - it's not an easy fix. You will need plenty of post op support

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
