Having a Hard Time Getting Motivated

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I hope you all are doing well. Here's my problem! Since my first appointment with my nutritionist, I have been walking 30 minutes a day. Now that I've had my surgery, I'm feeling like I should up my exercise, but I'm really dragging my feet on that. I'd love to hear ways that you guys motivate yourselves to get your heart rate up. I just feel a little overwhelmed when it comes to really exercising.

If you just had surgery, your body needs to heal first. I walked for maybe five minutes every hour or so for the first 4-5 days. Then I bought a little set of pedals and I pedaled while sitting on the couch starting for 15 minutes and worked my way up. My dr said no strenuous exercise fir six weeks. Time will come when you can o balls to the wall soon enough. Let your body recuperate.

Not sure anyone LOVES exercise. I do classes, 1hr and it's done. It is easy to talk myself out of them, but have my bagged packed in the car and go after work before going home............and I go on weekends (easier for me than weekdays).

Good luck.

I wasn't allowed to exercise until two-three weeks after surgery by surgeons orders! But normally you do have spurts where you don't want to and that's normal

Find something that you enjoy, preferably multiple things and then you will find yourself motivated to get going.

I agree w/ the others. If you just had surgery then walk but don't push yourself too hard. However, for me, one way to get motivated is to go with a friend. I found a Groupon to a local dance studio and my friend, daughter, and I go to Zumba classes a couple times a week. It is easier for me to stay motivated having someone else going too.

Also, I have found that getting sufficient sleep (I was horrible at staying up late and dragging all day) helps, as does losing weight. Let's face it, with an extra 50-100 lbs on us, it is hard to get the body moving. It sounds like you are doing well. As able, try to increase your pace.

Another thing that got me started with walking faster/farther was to walk to somewhere. My best friend lives a couple miles away so I walked to her house a few times. It was a good challenge for me and fun.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
