Recommended Posts

See everyone is so diffrent, I too am 5'9 or was..lol..and my doctor and nutrionist said 175, and I am perfectly happy with that for now, started at 260 is my heaviest..when I did my preop I was 255, but just the thought of being at my heighest is what I go at...When I hit 175 I will see from there, but right now putting on my size 12s feel pretty good!!!!

I would suggest your starting weight would be your weigh in the day you start your pre-op diet. Here is a link that would be helpful to find your goal weight http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm

Check with your dr reccomendations also.

Nice site! thanks!

People's choice is 177. Medical is 153. I guess I'll see when I get there.

I never set a goal weight. I just kept setting goals for myself. Once I got to that goal, I would set another goal. I finally got down to 160lbs (I'm 5'9") and I wear a size 6. Was happy with my weight so my goal was then to start putting on muscle. I have since put on 5 pounds and taken off body fat. So the scale is just a number to me. The BMI means nothing as it doesnt take into consideration muscle.

Great advice. My ultimate weight is 130. This was my pre baby weight 5 years ago when I was complete hottness. But bodies change with age and I might find happy at a heavier weight now. I won't really know till I get there. I aim for 5 pounds at a time since 50 would be too overwhelming. I hate the bmi, especially since it says I'm obese  . But it is a good way to find a healthy weight range. So my bmi weight says 145. I will try this weight on for size and see how I feel.Your doctor should have a special scale that measures body fat and muscle. This cannot be done online with the bmi calculator.

LOL, I laughed when you said that is when you were a complete hottness! Love it!

I use a machine at the Y that measures body fat, however I know it still isnt completely accurate.

First' date=' is my starting weight, my heaviest, my current weight or my weight the day of surgery? (after a 2 week liquid diet)

Second, how do I decide my goal weight? Do I look at a healthy BMI for my height? Do I just subtract 100 pounds? Do I use my senior year of high school weight? My lowest adult weight? HELP

I weigh 288. At 175 I looked really healthy and good (over 10 years ago) but that is far from the weight the charts say I should be.

I am 5'9.

Please tell me how you figured out a realistic goal weight and a suggested one for me based on what I just wrote[/quote']

I say forget the charts! I'm only 5 feet tall, but I have big bones (no really, I do!) so me weighing 110 pounds would look a lot different then someone with small bones and narrow being 110 pounds. So I would just say to be where you feel good! My goal is 130, and my doctors think that's good.

My weight loss center does a body scan to set your goal weight. It takes all the guesswork out of it because its based on your lean muscle mass, not a height/weight chart. The greatest thing about having the scan was that for the first time in my life, I understood why I couldn't get to 150 like the weight charts told me I should be. I found out that I really do have a large frame (which was my excuse all those years!) and at 5'8" that my target weight is 197. Only 18 lbs away-my goal finally looks like a possibility.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
