The individual Kraft Mac-N-Cheese cups came out with a whole grain version. Where would that fit in the post of diet? Mushies? When you can add egg noodles? I know a lot of diets vary by doctor on when you can add stuff in, so I was just curious? Pasta in general isn't really listed in the breakdown of foods in my manual.

My surgeon let me have Pasta in the soft food phase, not the mushie phase. However every surgeon is different and has different ideas, too. For instance, I was allowed cottage cheese in the liquid phase because I don't like yogurt. (weird huh?)

I'd ask your doc just to be sure, but on my post op diet, it would've been the soft food phase.

What is the difference between soft foods and mushy foods?

I didnt have Pasta for several months after surgery mostly because it is a slider food...meaning its hard to chew up into tiny pieces and after about an hour after dinner I would be bringing up pieces of pasta and it annoyed me.

But if I have it now I just am careful. 1/4 of a c is my limit for startches and this would have 55 calories in that amount if we are speaking about the same thing. Thats not too bad but there isnt much nutritional value in it... except the grain I suppose.

Soft foods are applesauce, yogart, ice cream. Mushies are close but maybe mashed Beans, potatoes, cottage cheese. MY Dr says they are the same thing if you chew it enough. ;)

per my own doing, i dont do Pasta or rice or breads (as flor says, its a slider and goes down easy) and frankly id rather fill up on Protein (meats) and some veggies.

seems to work for me. my dr approves so far :) though i do miss good ole mac and cheese but i ate enough of it in my past to be ok with not having it.

again, this is what i am doing and do not recommend it to anyone else.

So funny how different docs have different ideas. I wish they had one set of rules they all followed, it would make our lives so much simpler!

See my doctor said stuff like mashed potatoes, oatmeal, applesauce, or pretty much anything puree'ed to mush was a "mushy" food. Things like soft Pasta, chicken salad, tuna salad, or even scrambled eggs were a soft food. I was told mushy food should be the consistency of baby food and soft food was chewed but...well...soft.

As for Pasta, it's definitely not a slider food for me at all. If I eat too fast or too big a bite, it'll definitely get stuck. Also, I'm more than satisfied on a cup or less of it for 4 or more hours. (and I eat pasta often because I don't do the whole low carb thing, either)

Just another example of how different we can all be.

I can eat it but its got to be eatten slower then any other food or it get stuck, a lot of people find it sticks and they cant eat it. I was never a big Pasta eatter before so its not to hard to give it up. I try not to eat anything zi did b4 csuse thst is how zi got here I couldnt control the amount so I will wait a long while b4 I add Pasta. I do eat dark rye bread or muti-gsin crackers but I am 8 weeks out.

I'm just trying to find something to change up my tastes during this phase because I'm a picky eater and get burned out on things too quickly.

Thanks for all the responses! :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
