Being Banded In 4 Days -- Any Advice ???

Recommended Posts

Bandsters:

I'm getting banded by Dr. Kuri in Mexico on 10/17/12. Everything is set. My wife and father are coming with me as my mother is staying home to care for my brother who had the Skin surgery recently after losing 270 lbs with the lap band. So far I have the following:

1) Passport

2) Heating Pad

3) Nausene for nausia

4) Gas X

5) Polysporin Ointment for incision area

6) Cashier Check

7) Flight Itinerary and confirmation #'s

8) Hotel confirmation #'s

9) Cash for paying for medications, hotel and misc.

10) Lose clothing for flight back home and when leaving the hospital

11) Light robe and sandles to walk around the hospital rather than with that skimpy gown they give you after surgery

12) Papaya enzymes from GNC to help with any digestion issues if I have a stuck episode afterwords. This is definately after the liquid phase obviously.

Please pray for me as this is a life altering decision for me as well as it has been for all of you out there. I pray that I'm making a wise decision and this band won't somehow bite me down the road of some unintended consequence that was unforeseen. I know you all know what I'm talking about. I just pray not only for a healthy surgery but that I will use wisdom in working with the band properly. I don't want to misuse or abuse this thing....its an investment in my health, my family, ministry, and financially with future medical and food costs savings down the road.

P.S. Any advice pre or post trip would be appreciated. Also, any advice in making the transition with the band much easier would also be greatly appreciated.

At the end of the day....I just need your prayers, encouragement and any wisdom you have regarding your journey and success.

Respectfully submitted,

MD

I would also add :

- small travel pillow to hold against stomach

- peppermint tea for gas. Gas X is for digestive gas issues (surgery is cO2) and some say it works. For me, it did nothing.

hi there, if this is any help for you i was banded Dec, 2011 at 225 lbs. im now at 168 lbs, (goal is 140 ) feel and look 100% better. my sleep apnea is gone, my joints dont hurt, i have lots more energy, and i feel really strong and healthy ! i followed the Drs eating rules 95% of the time, swam 3x a week, walked 1x a week, made mostly healthy food choices, and watch the weight fall off, about a lb a week or so. I can eat 95% of the foods i ate before(Including steak, pizza , chicken , pineapple etc) and didnt have to make alot of huge uncomfortable changes , just healthier ones. i joined a Running Club 2 weeks ago , and love it ! 10 months ago i couldnt of ran a mile, well now i can ! it just keeps getting better and better ! I HAVE MY LIFE BACK !!!! there, i hope this helps you, and i hope you have a good trip to Mexico. dont forget the Chapstick, you'll need it on the airplane and after surgery.( cottonmouth) Good luck to you !( lap band = best. decision . ever. )

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
