I have United Healthcare and I went for my first consult today, I have to go to some nutrition classes and get some testing done. Since I'm 37 with no medical issues don't have to get to a BMI of 40 to get the surgery? I hate to gain anymore weight!

UHC is pretty strict. Of course, each plan is different, but their general requirement is BMI of 35 or over with TWO co-morbidities, or a BMI of 40.

I have United, started with a BMI of 37, and my surgery was denied at the last minute (literally, two days before surgery) because my doctor had submitted my co-morbidities as high cholesterol and high blood pressure. They were looking for "uncontrolled" high blood pressure. I had to get a copy of my last years BP readings from my PCP, fax to the surgeon, and he requested an immediate appeal. Luckily, he went to bat for me, and they over-turned their ruling the day before surgery - - 5 minutes before the cut-off for cancelling (the OR requested 24 hour notice). I was SO thankful for my surgeon, and so frustrated with UHC, but they all came through for me.

They are pretty particular, but if you have a good WLS Coordinator to help with the insurance "stuff" you should be okay. The good thing was, they were fast. The whole process took me 9 weeks - would have taken only 7 1/2 but I had strep throat and had to cancel my pre-op appt with the surgeon.

Good luck to you!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
