New And Nervous, From Alberta Canada

Recommended Posts

Hi all ---

So glad to have found this forum!! It seems no matter what question goes through my mind, I can dig around a bit here and find that someone has already asked it and someone else has already answered it. Its a godsend.

So about me, I have been overweight most of my life (which is 49 years). For the first 30ish years I kept it under control by sheer will power, but age and a hysterectomy and menopause and quitting smoking and a desk job..........well, pfffffftttttt. Here I am 65 pounds over my ideal -- gallbladders out, blood pressures up, the joints are inflamed and I am planning my lap band.

Tomorrow is my phone consult with the Dr. from SWLC. I have already spoken to someone from Slimband ---- is there a big difference between these two do you know? I will have to travel to Toronto to have the surgery, and I will be self pay, so I want to get the very best bang for my bucks.

I live in Grande Prairie, Alberta -- and both clinics assure me they have a Doc locally here for fills.

I guess the one thing I could use help with...what do I ask during this consultation? What is the got to have information that I need to remember?

I am nervous, but even more so I am excited. I can't wait to be a healthy weight again.

Thanks for listening :)

When I went to my consult I really wanted to know how long my doctor had been doing weight loss surgery, and what complications his patients have faced, and also how many of his patients have died. He was very honest with me about his 3 patients who had died and what happened with them. I liked his candor.

I also wanted to know all the preop requirements and the postop follow up care I'd get from his office. I didn't wanna get the surgery and just be kinda kicked to the curb. There is also monthly support groups and even clothes exchange. I liked everything about the office, the nurses, aides, and nurse practitioners. They're all compassionate and helpful. Be really nosy!

I'm from Edmonton Ab I'm heading to Vancouver as I type this my surgery is Wednesday I went through SWLC as well and Dr. Philip Mitchell who is from Calgary is doing my surgery...have u considered going to Vancouver? Only a short reasonably priced flight or 1100 air miles return flight or drive like we r its a beautiful drive we broke it into 2 days so its not so bad and my husband and daughter are coming...we don't pay for fuel though so that's the main reason we drove. Anyways I'm hear if u have questions and at the moment I'm pretty nervous!! Just got off the phone my surgery is at 10 am on wed yikes!!

Sorry just read ur posting again wanted to add a few things I looked into slim band as well but for me going to Toronto was out of the question I'm self pay as well and it was just to expensive to go that way...I had my phone consult with Dr. Mitchell he's great he will put ur mind at ease and if there is a question u don't think of till later u will receive an email from SWLC that will be full of attachments those attachments contain answers to almost every possible question it's a lot of reading as a matter of fact I printed out everything and kept all the reading material with me and when ever I had time I would read, hi light then read again lol I did have to do a 2 and a half week pre diet which consisted of 3 Protein Shakes a day and certain veggies which will all be listed in the material provided its a really hard diet but u can do it I didn't think I could but I did...I have lost 14 pounds on it so far and have 2 days left...I have found some days are harder then others...u will have to order the shakes from Meditrim they are shipped directly to u and u will get that form as well in the materials emailed from SWLC I think for 3 weeks worth it was about $235 I can't remember the exact amount. Anyways I hope this info helps:0)

You will love Dr. Cobourn.

I wasn't banded at SWLC but just met fellow bandsters for coffee this morning and there were some women in the group that were banded at SWLC.

Dr. C. has come to several of my coffee groups to give a talk on how the band works... he's a great guy. I'm sure you will be very happy with him and follow-up care at SWLC. I know several people that live out of town that were banded at SWLC and are very happy.

If you have any questions please feel free to email me.

Thank you for the replies. I had a phone consult with Dr. C today and was very impressed with his manner. I think I will go with SWLC --- it just seems more professional to have the Doctor call rather than a salesperson. Lana, my BMI is just a few pounds too low for Vancouver to take me, so Toronto it is. I have armloads of airmiles though, so the flight is not an issue. I went ahead and picked a date - November 7! Now I am very nervous, and excited, and all sorts of other feelings I have yet to put a name to. :) Mostly I am happy, I feel like I have made the decision to put things right.

Again, thank you all for being here. Tomander, I will take you up on that offer!

I live in Kelowna, BC and am also self pay. I spoke with Dr.C and SlimBand over the phone and then drove to Victoria to meet with Dr.Tang. I found Dr.C very helpful and great mannerisms while speaking with him. Overall I decided to go with Dr.Tang in Victoria BC. He is very honest and genuinely there to change peoples lives and overcome weight problems. I also found the cost to be lower ($15,300) for a grand total since i have to travel a long distance as it is an extra 2 hour ferry ride doesnt seem so bad for a lower cost. I wasn't overly impressed with SlimBand because I felt like it really was a sales pitch and Toronto is a little far. So I made my decision based on who made me the most comfortable and at ease. Congratulations and I wish you all the luck on your journey :)

I had the same problem, I told them I had chosen a surgeon and they constantly called even from Blocked numbers! It was insane.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
