Help My Hair's Falling Out!

Recommended Posts

Oh my goodness I expected some Hair loss post surgery (6/25/12), but in the last week it has increased a lot. I have fine hair to begin with so I am panicking. I started 5 mg of Biotin and a complete multi formula Vitamin right after surgery. Both formulated for baratriac patients.

At first the loss was was a bit more than normal shedding, but in the last week lots of hair coming out. This morning it was falling down my back when I got out of the shower. I noticed last week a difference in my hair thickness or I should say thinness. Any suggestions? How long will it last? Oh and I am very careful to get plenty of Protein.< /p>

Sorry to hear about your Hair loss. I know that must feel scary. Most hair loss related to nutritional deficiencies are caused by inadequate Iron, zinc or Protein. You stated that you are careful to get plenty of protein. Are you somewhere around 60g of protein/day? You should discuss this concern with your surgeon and/or PCP if you haven't already. However, from what I've read, some hair loss that is not related to nutritional deficiency can be related to psychological stress and/or the stress of surgery. Sometimes it can last up to six months post surgical procedure, but usually as you are losing hair, you are growing hair and it isn't as noticeable as you might think. It is certainly scary to find hair on your pillow or in the shower, or what have you, so I understand your concern wholeheartedly. Definitely seek advice from a medical professional. I'm sure they will put your fears at ease and assist you in determining the exact cause of your hair loss and the best course of treatment and prevention of further loss. Good luck, and please keep us posted!

60 to 75 grams of Protein every day will stop the loss and help it begin to grow back.

meat and salmon cottage cheese. Vitamins are needed but for the minerals. I always

check protein count,,,rather than calories. I am 9 months post-op and down 96 pounds

no Hair loss at all.......Good Luck

Thank you both for your advice. I checked my fitness pal logging and I am getting more than the required amount of Protein. Maybe I need some zinc. I hope it slows down and as you mention new hair should also be growing.

Thanks for your replys!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
