When Is A Slip Not A Slip?

Recommended Posts

Those of us that have been banded all know what a slip is. It is when the stomach pushes up past the band . It is caused by not following our post op diet instructions, eating too quickly, vomiting etc etc. Slips are bad because they mean that we might have to have surgery and could even lose our band.

But wait...............

Now there is new information.

It seems that a slip is not a slip. It is a dilation of the stomach above the band. That it can be caused by overeating or eating too quickly. So in simple terms it is referring to a stretching of the stomach above the band.

What frustrates me is that nothing is clear and that every new piece of information seems to contradict the last. I know that there is ongoing research and that new things will be discovered but they never seem able to explain any of them fully. You can go to some of the Dr's websites and read the info there and some of it appears to contradict itself. Even on the famed Dr Simpson's website ( I mention him as he is often quoted as an expert)

Many people have been advised to only eat a cup or less of food as more will stretch the pouch but now we are being told that there isn't really a pouch. We are also being told that food passes through the band in approx a minute(unless of course we get stuck). Well if it passes through that quickly then how is it even possible to stretch the pouch that we may or may not have? In 1 breath they are saying that overeating causes slips, pouch dilation etc but in the next they are saying the food doesn't sit in the "pouch" so then technically that can't be possible.

I have decided that there is 1 side effect from the band that is not widely spoken about. Headaches and mental confusion from trying to understand it all. Maybe it isn't necessary to understand, maybe we just need to learn to accept that it works and not worry about the how but that is not something I can do. I have always questioned everything. Plus how are we supposed to ensure that we don't end up with serious side effects such as slips if we don't really know how they happen?

You hit it on the head! Right on!

100%

I think (and my doctor has told me this too), that the band works a little differently for each individual. We need to learn how to work with it in a way that we can live with and stop getting so nervous. After seeing the videos of the famous Dr. O'brian, I realized that this is not black and white, heck its not even one dimensional. Every doctor has their own ideas/theories, and many overlap and contradict each other. This is something that we each have to define for ourselves and work with it the way we can. (obviously within reason, and without being unwise)

I guess the cold, hard facts of even the band are debatable...just the as about every other medically related topic. There is new research which may change the "rules" as we have known them to be...quite confusing to say the least.

I guess, that as in numerous other areas as well, there is no "one size fits all" answer.

We should do our best to adhere to the "rules" as we know them, and do so with the reality and understanding that we will not be perfect in our compliance, and that the rules can change along the way of our journey.

And I agree...never stop asking questions! Our health and well being may depend on it...

Well said elcee and I've heard so many people say that yes you stretch your pouch because food sits in your pouch. My understanding has been that if food sits in your pouch then that means a stuck moment and that means you will either vomit it up or it will pass with pain through your band. If you view dr Paul o'briens videos on you tube he shows what happens as you chew your small bite of food and how it travels down your esophagus and then gets squeezed through the band. I've asked him about this a few times as these wls forums can be so confusing at times. He has also told me yes some rules may change as they do more studies as years go by. One rule that has changed been when to fill patients. He used to do it at four weeks but with the studies he undertakes and with the results that come out of these studies he explained that fills are done at three weeks as that's when most people find the hunger is returning.

I love reading the forum posts and the majority are extremely helpful but many are also confusing.

There are three classifications of slips:

(a) Pouch dilation above the band. This happens when people eat too fast on a chronic basis. This leads to reflux and heartburn, as do all of the slips

(B) Pouch dilation with slip. The pouch dilates, as it dilates it pulls up stomach above the band. This is the most common type of slip that we deal with

© Pure slip. Easiest surgically to deal with- happens when something gets stuck and people try to force it out.

Slips are a complicated topic - and they are best avoided by (a) Not having the band too tight (B) not eating too fast

food goes through the band quickly- or we hope quickly. If it stays above the band for too long it can cause problems.

We have more on our site at azlapband.com/blog -- hope you find the information helpful there.

Thanks for the extra info. It's great to have input from a Dr.

Can you give any additional explanation on how the dilation occurs. If the food is passing through in a minute I still don't see how this is possible.

How do you know if your band has slip, my band revived 4-24-2012. And at time of operation the doc put 2cc in the band , as of today sept 10,2012 I still havnt recived a fill, my deal is that up unroll about a week and a half ago, I had a hard time eating bread or chicken if to dry , I would get plugged up , then all the sudden a week and a half ago , I could eat breads , dry chicken , I can eat anything , I was wondering if my band might of slipped? Or is it that it's lose now and I need a fill? Oh and I got app in nov 30,2012 to talk about a fill but , doesn't sound to promising , that would make it 7 mo. Sense my operation with no fill, I'm confused as can a band stretch and become lose that's why the fills? Or could it be that my band really did slip?

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
