What Happens At The Nutritional Appointment?

Recommended Posts

I have to meet today with the nutritionist. What happens at that appointment?

I'm sure they all have their own variations, but here is what happened at mine.

She went over the basics of why eating healthy after any WLS is so important, and then brought out a model of a banded stomach cut in half to visually show how food passes through. This was to show why it's important to take tiny bites and chew thoroughly.

She showed me how to use a food scale. She then took a normal measuring cup of food and demonstrated with plastic food an example how to stay in the cup or less per meal rule.

She also used a dessert or salad plate to show food portions on it.

Then she sat down with me and helped me establish healthy food guidelines to follow.

For me, seeing the nutritionist turned out to be so crucial to weight loss. It's helped me so much to have clear guidelines to follow and understand how to eat with the band.

i met with mine for 2 hrs and she went over the food basics. you remember the pyramid? she went over the (basics)

she then went over what foods are important to eat after banding and to help me stay full and that are good for me.

like mis, she showed me the scale and how to measure my foods. she asked what i liked to eat and what i didnt and gave me examples that fitted me better.

i learned alot and walked away from her with a much better understanding of the mission at hand and also she stressed, it was up to me to (eat) to lose weight. not eat because i can.

My 1st visit was as above. We also have two additional classes. The first is pre-op diet and the second is post-op diet. Apparently it was one 2hr class, but patients were overwhelmed by info so they split the class.

I have had the 1st class and it was nice to talk about the why of the pre-op. They gave is plenty of samples of unjury and good multi-vitamins/calcium supplements (is. Calcium citrate is the most easily digested and absorbed)

I am scheduled for post-op class on the 23rd.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
