Heartburn/ Acid Reflux

Recommended Posts

I was banded in December and have lost a little over 50 pounds. I have recenly began experiencing frequent heartburn after meals and acid reflux at night. I've taken Tums and liquid antacids - they worked in the beginning but aren't completely relieving my problem now. Does anyone else suffer from this? My band was last filled in May - and I don't think the problem is it being too tight. Any suggestions would be great - it's miserable to have this problem!

Some of the people in my coffee group have experienced this.

Some suggestions... try not eating past 7:00 p.m.

Drink a large glass of Water 2 hours before you go to bed. (Helps flush out the band.

I suffered from acid reflux since I was 14. I was 39 when I was banded.

My acid reflux went away 3 days after I was banded.... I lived on Tums and was on two prescription meds. I have not had ANY acid reflux in over 6 years.

You may also want to try a tiny defil.

I hope you get some relief.

Good luck

Tom, Toronto

Banded July 6 06

Wt. Loss: 156 lbs

Check in with your surgeon. Those are classic symptoms of a band that is too tight. My last fill was in November, it did not get too tight until February.

I just posted a long post about that fill's journey. The tightness went on far too long. Go be seen just to be sure it isn't the band.

I suffer from heartburn now, as well. I don't like takeing pills, even asprin, so I sought holistic remedies such as drinking a glass of milk, or eating greek yogurt right when the heartburn symptoms came. (This only gave momentary help.) However, after about 2 months of this Ifinally went to see my doctor (also banded) and he recommending OTC Prolisec 14 day treatment. I tried it and on the first day, the heartburn went away. Sometimes it pops up again if I eat late at night or if I eat foods that are harder to digest or spicy. For this, I take Tums and eat yogurt and drink cold Water to relieve it.

I've found that being active after dinner keeps me from getting reflux/heartburn at night. I discovered this on vacation. I was starting to have a little trouble during the night about a month before I went away, (not long after my last fill). I noticed that when I was home I tended to be lazy and just sit around or I would lay around shortly after dinner, this is when the problems started. Now while on vacation I was up and walking around most of the night so that by bed time I had no issues. When I got home I starting just sitting around again after dinner to see if this was what this issue was, it sure was, the reflux came right back. Now I either go to the grocery store after dinner or take a short walk, I try to do something. Being active seems to help my food digest and keeps me from experiencing reflux.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond and offer the much needed advice- I am scheduled to see my surgeon in the morning - I'll post what he suggest - but for now ... It's your suggestions that are keeping me almost "reflux" free

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
