A thread for super-sized bandsters - starting BMI over 50?

Hi michiganer & sassy780,

Congratulations on your approval for the surgery.

CIGNA was my provider and they denied me twice before giving verbal approval and then they refused to give the approval letter, but it all worked out and they gave written approval. Just keep on them.

Again congratulations!

We need a place where we can support each other through our "more than most" journey. Just as turtles don't get much out of hearing us talking about fast we're losing, maybe it would give us a nice break from "I'm getting banded because I need to lose 60 lbs".

I think we have our own unique challenges, expectations, baggage, etc. -- and we need our own little niche to support eachother. We all have a very long journey ahead of us, and need to band together. ;)

Thanks for this thread, I think everyones fight to lose will be difficult, but when someone has over 100-150# or more to lose that battle will be extended and have other issues to deal with. Its a long road and some uphill battles. I hope I will find support and encouragement here and that I can offer the same to others. I'm only a little over 2 weeks out but hope I can offer assistance to a few hurdles I have crossed. :biggrin1:

Congrats on the weightloss so far Brenda G., you are doing awesome! I am having my surgery on November 7th, that is right around the corner and I am excited and scared at the same time. If you don't mind sharing have you had other surgeries in the past, and if you have did you recovery faster this time?

I had two surgeries 2 months apart about 2 1/2 years ago and I am hoping that I recovery a lot faster with this one since the other's weren't that great and I had complications.

And I am going to the gym. Some weeks are better then others but I am going and that is what counts in my head.

I had two surgeries 2 months apart about 2 1/2 years ago and I am hoping that I recovery a lot faster with this one since the other's weren't that great and I had complications.

I don't know if I'm the best person to ask about recovery, I've had a pretty rough time. I have had previous surgeries, many years ago, I have a large sunken scar on my far right side from appendix surgery and a very long mid-stomach scar from gallbladder surgery. So all of my banding scars are on my left side I have a total of 7 incisions which I am told is abnormal, but was necessary because of my previous scarring. Recovery the first 4 days was really rough for me, my sister came and stayed with me for those days, it was a real life saver. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you have the resources. Just remember to sip fluids as much as possible, I got a sippy cup to use, it really helped in reminding me not to take a big drink (very painful). I also stocked up on gas-x strips and Mylanta, and let me tell you a made a major dent in my supply (ha ha). I heating pad is also a must, or was for me, helps with the stomach discomfort and I also have left shoulder pain. It helped for me to make a list of things I though I would need and went shopping prior to surgery, I wish you the best of luck and let us know how things progress.

Hi MissSac,

Congratulations on your surgery date.

It helped me to use my time before surgery to learn a bandster bite and sip. It really helped when my post surgery life bagan.

Good luck and keep us up to date on how you are feeling.

phyllser..thanks for giving me a pull up and dusting off my shoulders. I am going to hit it again tomorrow and see if i can turn it around for even a day.

My agenda:

im going to hit it with a Protein Shake, a quick throw clothes on, pack my backpack and go to the gym. i havent been in a while. I need to. its two miles from my house and i just cant stand the rain anymore. Im going to try it again tomorrow. Id like to lose ten by thanksgiving. I cant use thanksgiving as a goal though because im kinda avoiding it this year.

I see my dr again in twenty days, and i think my restriction is good adn that i dont need a fill. Id like to lose 8lbs by then. that would rock.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
