A couple of years ago, Don Mills of Inamed told me that the band can "cure" reflux in those who have it pre-op and can cause reflux in those who never had it.

On of my negative consequences of having the band was reflux. Your physician needs to know so that the impact can be lessened. Long-term, acid in the esophagus is not a good thing.

Eileen, if you are only 3 weeks post-op and having heartburn when you eat, hello, meat? At 3 weeks post-op?!!!! What kind of meat and fish are you eating? I don't want to give you a hard time, but you need to go a little easier on your band and stick to Soups and very very soft foods for a few more weeks. Your body is telling you to back off the dense foods. Listen carefully to it!

I never had any reflux problems before banding, and for the most part, I still don't, but I have learned how to avoid it by eating properly. I also drink 3-4 ounces of Aloe Vera juice at night before bedtime. I think this helps soothe and heal anything that might have become irritated over the day. So, yes, I am careful to avoid it. Heartburn is no good! Call your doc and keep your diet mushy. Let us know how it goes!

I have a negative upper GI and sure hope I don't get reflux again ever. Tell me where you buy the Aloe Vera juice please. I think you gave that girl some good advice. I to was thinking she is irritating her stomach and that band after only 3 weeks out.

Dody, I found the Aloe Vera juice at Wal-Mart and at Walgreens...it's a few bucks cheaper at the Wal-Mart. It's in the section with the tummy meds; antacids, etc. Usually on the bottom shelf since it's in a fairly large container. Refridgerate after opening. Not the best tasting stuff but it goes down. It's good for you from top to bottom! :biggrin1:

How ya doin' Eileen?

With my first band, I had no heart burn ever (didn't have a great weight loose 50 lbs in 1.5 years) OK that's pretty good

The smaller band I have now gives me grief every day! prelosec, tums.

Big change to how much i can eat.

Many obese people have heartburn (GERD) before banding from a hiatal hernia. These are often routinely repaired along with the band surgery, since the band goes just where the hernia is. About 3/4 of those with this cause of reflux find it completely gone after band sugery.

DEVELOPING reflux after banding is an entirely different thing, and can be very dangerous. Not only can it mean a too tight fill (or other trouble if youhave no fill yet), it can cause a very bad form of pneumonia which will set you back badly. It also damages the esophagus, mouth, teeth and more. It can causeasthma, ear infections, sinus infections and hurts the stomach - and we have to do all we can to keep the stomach healthy if we want to keep pur Bands.

Your doctor should have given you a clear post-op diet, and I don't know of any who allow solid meat and fish only 3 weeks after surgery. the stomach needs to heal and the band needs to be secured by good scar tissue before you add the stress of digesting (whih causes the stomach to move around and will loosen unhealed sutures)

Talk with your doctor about the reflux; never ignore it or suppress it with medication before you find out WHY you are having it. It is a danger signal. Renee

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
