Did your surgeon repair a hiatal hernia at the time of banding? That can cause additional pain. It is always a good idea to contact your surgeon if you are having chest pain. If you feel it may be more than just recovery pain.

It is normal for it to hurt. My doctor gave me this machine to help get through it. But if you don't have one then you can take deep breathes and hold it a couple times an hour and before you know it youll be feeling better. My worst day was around the third day and it lasted a few days but then I got feeling really good.

Make sure you are exercising your lungs using the spirometer you should have received.

The same thing happened to me, what happens is that while having stomach surgery, its makes it harder to brethe in and out fully so in my case parts of my lungs were collapsing, but I felt better after using my spirameter? I think thats how its spelled....but use it! It works! At least 10 x an hour, use a pillow and press against your stomach when you need to cough, when you brethe in hold it for a second or two, it needs to open up your so called " grapes" in your lungs.

The pain medicine can also cause shortness of breath, I would rather be pain free tho...I am on day 5 and I am almost completely back to normal...The first few days suck but its worth it!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
