21 And Hoping To Get The Lap Band

Recommended Posts

Hey, everyone. Ok so, i am new to this. On my 21st birthday, which was June 2, my dad gave me the surprise of a lifetime. he said that he would pay for me to get the lap band if i qualified. I am 5'7" and 230 pounds. i have been overweight practically my whole life. i do not have any major health issues NOW. But i am worried about my future. My dad had gastric bypass done about 7 years ago. He weighed over 500 pounds. Now i believe he is down to 275. He HAD sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and was borderline diabetic. All those problems went away after his surgery. i do not want to have to get to the point of weighing twice what i do now, nor do i want to wait until i get these problems to fix my weight. I have tried dieting and i lose about 10 pounds then nothing else, i get discouraged, and eat. Is there anyone out there who may have similar problems as me? i am just hoping that i am able to qualify for this surgery. It will be a life-changing moment and i cannot wait to be healthy and able to do things that i cant do now.

If you are self pay you will most likely not need to go through the qualifying process that insurance companies require.

I am the same way. I have tried every diet under the sun and only loose a few pounds and gain it back. I have been overweight for a few years now, with it at its highest ever. I have currently gone through the whole process with my doctor and I have heard back from my insurance and all they need is a medical clearance from my PCP. I am doing that Thursday so hopefully after that I will be on the road to surgery.

Good luck to you and this journey you are about to take!!!!

If you are self pay, then no need for the other health issues. If you are going through insurance, they do usually require 35-39 BMI with one or two comorbidities or 40+ bmi without.

yeah, i checked and my bmi is at 36. If at all possible we want to get help with insurance but not sure if we can. Thanks for the support! I am super happy about this and i feel like my life will change tremendously for the better.

Good for you LIndsey. Get super educated about the band and how it works and I'm sure you will be successful.

Wow... wish I could have done it at 21.

Good Luck

Thank you! I am really trying to understand it all. Going through the similar surgery with my dad has helped me understand it already, but there are alot of major differences with his surgery and lap band. I am hoping the down time wont be as bad.

Down time is extremely less than either gastric or the sleeve because they aren't actually removing a part of your stomach. I only had to take a couple days off of work and really felt great after day three.

Ok good! that is one thing i was worried about. Because he was down for a while. And see, he didnt drink his Protein Shakes like he was supposed to and i can remember he was so weak for like 3 months after his surgery. But i know because it doesnt actually remove anything that helps the recovery alot.

Hello.. Well I'm 24 and weigh about 206-208 and with a BMI of 41-42. I also have the same concerns about getting approved becuase to my knowledge and as of my last physical I do not have any major health issues however I do have joint pain. But I'm like you I don't want to wait until I get bigger to have health issues. I go to my first seminar Wednesday. I hope everything works out for you! :) god bless your father for paying!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
