ugh man am i in pain! this was my first surgery and boy is my stomach, or atleast the abdominal wall hurting. standing up my gut pulls down and makes the pain worse. i just cannot wait to get over the healing process and be better. i feel like i have to burp but cannot, trying the gas x strips for the tongue only had a thing of Jello today so that hasnt helped either. Hopefully in a few days things will be better. anyone else have these issues?

Hi there....

I did have some of these issues...I am 5 weeks post op. Just remember you went through a lot today and your body needs to heal and it will take time. Try and walk around if you can...it can help with the gas. sleep helps as well... Hang in there!!

Yep. I'm in my third day post-op, having some similar issues. Stay on top of your pain meds. Also, I used ice packs. That helped. Feel better!

For me it's been a week now since surgery, and the first day or two was the worst...they say move around and like most ppl I probably rolled my eyes, but damn it works get up and move as soon as you can. No marathons just a couple minutes walking....first day or two I thought I was in the movie aliens and thing something was going trying to get out of me lol it's a lot better now.

Use a small pillow to hold against your stomach when getting up/sitting down, in/out of cars, or lying in bed. You can use the pressure of the pillow to hold everything in place so your incisions/port aren't getting pulled on.

Hang in there.. it'll get better. REST!! That's the best way to allow your body to heal. Also, talk short walks if you can. That will help with the gas.. also deep deep breaths. This actually worked better for me at expelling the extra CO2 than walking.

Take your pain meds. It'll give you some peace over these next few days.

Another thing.. I used a heating pad on my shoulders and back for about a week after surgery. SUPER soothing!

Good luck! You're already over the biggest hurdle! :)

I am glad you said something about taking deep breaths, that is the first time I heard that.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
