I am 3 yrs post op and still have questions. I just had an ajustment yesterday and am very frustrated. First, the office of my physician is VERY short staffed and it is extremely difficult to get an appointment. I went for an upper gi in March and they determined I was swollen and should have all of Fluid removed. I could not get back in for an adjustment until yesterday UGH. So in 2 months time with no restriction a lot of damage was done to my weight loss :(. The PA that I saw filled my band to what he thought was good. Last night my stomach gergled and rumbled ALL night, I tasted a disgusting taste in my mouth like bile or something then 4x throughout the night I threw up Black liquid? ?? What is that?? I didnt have anything to eat and have only drank Water due to the recent fill. What do you suggest? has this happened to anyone else?

That doesn't sound good. Your doctor should have an emergency line. I would call or visit an ET. That could be bile.

It sounds like reflux from a possibly too tight band. Not a doc here, just going by what I've read about bands and people's experiences over the years.

Call your surgeon's office line and tell the answering service what is going on. They'll get a message to your surgeon or one who is on call. Don't mess around with these symptoms.

it sounds like bile to me... i would ring drs rooms as soon as possible. do you still have your gall bladder? has there been much pain? it does need to be looked at.

The black stuff could be bile. It could also be blood. Nothing to mess with.

The black stuff...does it look a bit like coffee grinds watered down? If so, that's blood (most likely) and you need attention straight away before this progresses into a slip. Please try to keep yourself hydrated with sips of Water.< /p>

Thank you, I did what you all suggested I didnt wait I called the on-call line. My surgeon met me at the hospital and took some Fluid out of my band. Yes he confirmed it was blood and not something that should have waited. I am on the mend and feeling better..Thanks again :)

I'm curious, did he say what was causing the blood? Did you have that due to your band being too tight?

Ultimately, yes it was because the band was too tight. However, the bleeding was from the wrenching and straining of my stomach when i was throwing up.

Wow thank goodness you got it taken care of in time. Do keep a eye on that in the future. Take care and good luck.

Thank you for the update, very glad you are feeling better! Awesome that your surgeon was able to meet you and you didn't have to count on an ER doc to do an unfill. yay!

We have a doc come to my work a couple times a month to do physicals, he is an ER doc by trade. I stopped in to say hi to the nurse when he was there one day. He'd never met a bad patient. He was fascinated, felt my port, asked a bunch of questions...decided he'd call a bariatric surgeon if a band patient ever came to his ER needing an unfill.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
