Problem With Protein Shakes

Recommended Posts

I'm getting banded May 30, and my surgeon requires a two-week liquid diet pre-surgery. I was required to purchase shakes from his office ($225!) - they are called "Bariatric Advantage" - there is a whole line of shakes, Vitamins, etc. Okay, so ... the shakes are really, really gross. I've had two so far, and I threw up part of the second one because it was so nasty. The texture is awful ... like slime.

So my question is - I see a lot of people talking on her about different kinds of shakes, and I'm wondering why my surgeon required this particular brand. Is anyone else on this kind?

Hmmmm. I'm not sure why you were required to purchase from your doctor.

My opinion is that Protein is a very personal decision and you have to experiment until you find the one that tastes the best for you. Some of the ones that people rave about here I do not like at all and I'm sure my favorite is not the favorite of others.

Once you find the one that's most pleasing to you, it does make the Protein shake part of your lift much happier!

I have not heard of that particular brand before. It really should not matter what brand Protein powder or shake you are using as long as it meets all of the nutritional requirements recommended by your surgeon. The higher the Protein grams with every shake, and the lower the grams of carbs, the better it is.

Sounds to me that they just want to get some extra money from their patients...Also very important is to be certain that the shake has "100% whey isolate protein", as this is the best type for bariatric patients.

My surgeon also sells powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury brand in his office, but we are not required to purchase it there. From Day 1 of my liquid diet, I have been using "Wheybolic Extreme 60" Protein Powder from GNC. It has 30 g of protein with every 1.5 scoops of powder, so every shake has 37 g of protein if you also include the 7g protein from the skim milk. The goal is to get as much protein per shake as possible. I actually like both the Cookies 'n cream and chocolate flavors, and have been using the entire time.

You may have to try several different brands before you find 1 or 2 that you like...Be certain to read the nutrition label on the powder your doctor sells, and try to make certain that your substitute powder meets the same level of nutrition.

Good luck...keep searching, you will find something better suited to your tastes.

And now I see that you can buy this (nasty) brand online, and that the amount I bought (had to buy) would be $180, as opposed to the $225 I was required to pay at my doctor's office! So not happy right now ....

They gave me a list of recommended Protein Drinks and Bariatric Advantage was on that list, I ordered some samples and tried one and wanted to vomit. I also ordered their bariatric Vitamins and couldn't stomach the taste. The thing with Protein drinks that I've seen is everyone has a different taste and you may love one that someone else hates. So you really have to try different ones to see which one you like. On my pre and post op diets I loved the Unjury brand (still do, but don't really use it anymore). I also got Premeir Proting now from costco which I love. I think you need to talk to your doc about trying a different brand. As for having to buy it from him, he's probably just trying to make more money unfortunately.

Yes, my nutrionist affiliated with my surgeon also recommended Bariatric Advantage. Really I had no clue and purchesd a large bag like a fool $59 and don't like it. Through trial and error I have found so many other Protein powders out there that are delicicous (to me). I really perfer "UNflavored" Protein Powder because I can mix it with anything. I found unjury and Now's unflavored protien powder is the best for me. Now, I have found for myself that "Pure Protein" chocolate Protein powder is very good and at $17 for 2 pounds of it you can't go wrong. The nutrional value is great, and you get lots of protein in a scoop.

Honestly, it is going to be through trial and error you will find your favorite, best of luck :)

May I ask a question? I have to do a 2 week pre-op diet as well, coming up soon, and am shopping around for Protein shakes etc., I am not tolerant of "milky" tasking things like "slimfast" type shakes, I gag, if you use unflavored protein powder how do you make a shake or what do you mix it in??? Help! I wouldn't mind mixing it with skim milk but would need a flavor of some sort its the pre-flavor already mixed up milky shakes that gag me and I throw up on. thanks

When I "had to" drink them I used Carnation Instant Breakfast mixed with skim milk. That was like drinking chocolate milk. Mixed with the milk it had 13 g of protien and about 230 calories.

I mix the unflavored protein powder in sugar free drinks, such as crystal light etc. I also mix it with low sodium chicken broth. You can add it to almond mild (unsweetened) skim milk, really whatever liquid you are drinking. You can also put make it in your sugar free jell-o (instant boxes). I even heard some people sprinkle in their yogurts and Cereal.

Wow. My surgeon doesnt require an all liquid pre-op. We have 3 choices and I'm doing basically a 'phase 3 Atikins' . But I really like the Designer whey Protein powder in berry. I have to use just half a packet in a bottle of Water though. It's a little strong in favor. And I like the AdvantEdge protein drinks in vanilla. Jmo. Good luck. :)

There is nothing special about any particular product, that's just your doctor pushing something he has a vested interest in. Buy elsewhere if you don't like them.

I hate Protein shakes and never drank more than two or three. They're disgusting and man made and not a patch on real food in my humble opinion. They're not a part of my diet ever. And I lost weight just fine, have kept it off for five years and am not suffering from lack of muscle, hair loss or Protein deficiency.

I have bought different brands and I have to say Unjury tastes the best but they don't come with the most. The costco one is pretty good and Muscle milk is just nasty

"They're disgusting and man made"

My sentiments exactly! I feel like I'm pouring chemicals into my body for 2 weeks straight.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
