How Do You Deal With Your Family Eating?

Recommended Posts

How do you deal with your family eating while you are not? I am only on day 4 Post-Op, and admit that I am a food addict, so watching my husband making Hamburger Helper while I am eating a 1/4 cup of cream of chicken Soup with Protein powder...it's making me unreasonably mad....and frustrated....and sad....any advice or tips...

AND...PS...when does this gas go away?

Oh I have the same problem. I am still expected to plan out/prepare meals for my husband and toddler, and feed the infant but he is easier at least. Anyway, because I too am fresh post op and missing my friend food, im crabby. I don't want to be around it, taunted by it. Tonight we ordered Papa Johns (for them, i ate scrambled freakin eggs) and my husband fed my son a fast food taco for lunch today. My poor family. I made a big roast in the crock pot for them so all they had to do was warm it up on the day of my surgery but they still ate the crap-fast food. In a few weeks, when we are able to eat real food, I envision us all eating healthier. In the meantime do what you can to survive.

And the gas. It gets better. Benefiber, colace and gas x strips were all helpful. I'm 9 days post op.

...and boy oh boy... can i identify with you on this one. My hubbie doesnt cook but i have to prepare good meals for him twice a day. its got to the point where im having my meal first. then its not quite so bad. now im eating more i can sit with him but he wolfes his food down so quickly that its unsettling. he is up and cleaning up while im still eating. bad manners to say the least and a real eye opener for me. I dont know what to suggest... perhaps have something before he starts to prepare tea?? its not quite so bad then. i felt the same way... i was angry, frustrated, all the same issues that you have had. Mind you, im getting more used to it now ... its nearly 7 weeks. i think that it does even out a bit. its all very new to you right now. Sorry i didnt have a lot of things you could try.. lol.. but i did have something to eat before hand and it helped me through some mealtimes.

If you're responsible, then it means you get to make the rules!! Just make stuff that you can eat and make them eat it too... White fish is on the mushy-diet list if that's where you still are, so why not make some lemon sole, mash up a couple of potatoes with butter and make some stringbeans? The whole thing will take 1/2 hour to make and cost about $15... It has to be a lot better then smelling Papa Johns! That sounds like total torture to me!!!!

I actually nibbled a little on toppings, no meat. Just cheese and sauce. Wasn't even that great. Didn't feel like it was getting stuck or anything. Melted cheese isn't on my soft mushy food list so I won't be doing that anymore, I'm respecting my band and it's limitations. I think all of us fresh post ops are. My fam is going to have to start eating healthier Sasha. I have an ultra picky toddler. Hopefully he will catch on.

Me too, and it's a challenge. But I find that while she'll only eat like 12 foods, thankfully avocados, fish and broccoli are among them... along with crackers, bread, pancakes, goldfish, Cereal and anything else white carbs. hehee. and pizza and really any kind of candy. if she could live on candy she'd be fine...

It's so frustrating! At least yours will eat avocados and broccoli. The healthiest things mine will eat are oatmeal and corn. And that ain't super healthy. But other than that our kids have the same likes. I've been feeding mine a beef taco laced with rice and black Beans a lot lately. He eats it up! Good luck to you and your picky lil child.

..and it sounds like torture to me as well. i reckon this is the b est idea. Just cook for the others basically what you are allowed to have. mostly ive done this and its not been too bad. its the speed my family wolf their food down with that worries me more.

I have encountered this this weekend. I was banded on Thursday, the 26th, and my wonderfully amazing friends brough dinner for my husband and son. My husband works 12 hour shifts so I helped him by heating the meals up...and although I love hotdogs...I just didn't want anything to do with them. I will admit that I did taste the "broth" of the chili my friend made to see if it was too spicy for my son--it was. Today I am fixing a favorite crock pot dinner for my husband...I guess I'll have to wait and see how I feel when I get home...so far I have been too tired to "covet" his food--I have been taking a walk around the block before he gets home. The past couple weeks I have made an effort to make the meals more healthy so that it woun't be such a shock once I'm able to partake. I am also terrified about getting "stuck" and don't want to risk that yet. Don't worry...before long you'll be able to enjoy meals with your family again.

I just don't feed the family

:D

I'm just heartless! Guess I should explain... I'm single, work odd hours, and my kids are all adults. If anything they monitor what I eat. On a side note, I've also decided that kids should come with a pension plan. If you do an awesome job and they become productive adults, it seems only fitting we get some reward for a job well done? AND NO grandkids are NOT enough. I think it's only fair for a job well done.

Sorry went off topic there just a little bit. My bad :P

The good thing about Toddlers is that you CAN teach them good habits. YOU control what goes in their mouth. They will not starve. They WILL test you, and try and wait for the "good" stuff. It's tough for a couple of days but you can do it. If I put Hummus and veggies in front of my toddler (who likes these things), and also have chicken nuggets in site, or something else, then she holds out for it, or screams, or other typical toddler behavior. I move those out of sight, she gets hungry, and eats healthy. I also found a way to bake chicken nuggets so that they taste fried but are not.

I have no advice for the husband other than to have a talk about respect. I had to have that conversation with mine and fast food is no longer allowed inside unless I'm eating it too. Other than that he gas HORRIBLE manners.

My surgeon told me, for the first few days post op, don't let anyone eat in front of you. The smell alone can induce nausea fits, which make even Water become undesirable. During the liquid phase and mushy phase post op, it was really hard. I would also cook my DH some of my favorite things, but somehow I found the will to just remember that isn't my food anymore, I have a new plan. I ended up finding some foods I could have that i bought just for me, at them infront of him, and made him jealous of what I was eating. He understood then. Now that I'm able to eat normal foods again, it's easier. I just eat much less and it takes me forever to eat.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
