Newbie--I Want Lap Band, But I'm Scared (And So Is My Wallet!)

Recommended Posts

Oh, I have so many questions. Is anyone else from Canada? Alberta, specifically? I am really thinking that lap band surgery is probably the way to go for me, as I have lost weight many times before, only to gain it back plus 30 lbs. I am desperate.

I'm looking into Slimband. Anyone had that? In Toronto? I looked into Mexico, but that sounded scary as all get out, so that's out. Cheap, though. Slimband costs $16000 (although they have a special right now where you get $1000 back for travel expenses). Is that about the normal price for all of the ones in Canada and the US?

Hi Kittymama. I also self-payed for my band (Realize 11cc), although I'm in the US, not Canada. My cost was just over $10,000 and included everything up through the first 90 days of follow up and fills. I'm not exactly right next door, but I am in Washington state, so that price was at least in the Pacific NW of the US. Good luck with your journey to band land! :)

I had my band installed last week in Vancouver by SWLC out of toronto. The cost was $17,000.

Thanks for your responses! Hmmm, the Pacific NW and Vancouver are both much closer to me (I don't really want to go to Toronto). However, although the price you mentioned, morelgirl, sounds quite cheap, I do know that Slimband has a special on, that the Alberta government gives a small rebate, and that I can claim it on my taxes and get a good chunk back. So I guess it would work out to be a similar price.

Running_scared, I imagine you researched SWLC and Slimband, then, and decided on the SWLC? What made you go that route? As I said, I'd rather go to Vancouver or somewhere closer, but the Slimband program sounds pretty good to me. I just don't want to pay for it! lol

I found SWLC first, so that's who I went with. Also, my surgeon lives in Calgary, and so I can see him here for all the appointments and fills. I like that I can see him on short notice as well, without having to travel, whereas with slim band, I don't know where I'd go for the fills.

Apparently, I'll be getting about $2000 back from AHS for surgeon and anaesthesia fees. I'm also self-employed, so I'm the administrator for my own HCSA account, so I can write off 100% of the cost.

Are you in Calgary?

Yes, I`m in Calgary. Slimband has offices where you get the fills done by a nurse. There's one in Calgary.

Are you in Calgary?

Thanks. I want to do it, I'm just afraid I'll spend all that money and it won't work, you know?

I have that as a fear as well. It is a lot of money, but I'm going to continue to work at my health, and I think that makes it worth it.

I'm in Calgary too, I'm going to Toronto to have the banding done by SWLC. My BMI was too high to have Dr.Mitchell do it here in AB.

How do you get a rebate in AB? Is it only if you have the surgery done here?

There is a form for out of province reimbursement, and you just get Dr Mitchell (or whoever) to fill it out.

I'm in Seattle and the price that was quoted to me is 15000 and that includes everything before surgery and 13 months after. I haven't been banded yet either.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
