Wanted to *bump* this thread up, because I am terribly interested in the information. I could do the surgery at Easter and have 4 days to do the surgery and go back to work Thurs-Sunday, back to work on Monday, or I need to wait until summer. I really don't want to wait, but think I may need to since I drive 45 minutes one way to work. Please keep the info coming and share your opinions on this too please!

I had my surgery on Wednesday and went back to work on Monday. I still had some gas pains but they were minor and I drive a long distance also. I've had surgery before and knew how I'd reacted to that. I know that each surgery is different and people are all different but for the most part I think it's pretty normal to be back at work about 4 days afterward (if your job isn't physical - from what my doctor told me).

My first week post op:

The surgery went well, but I was in recovery forever due to no room available. Stayed over night and went home the next day to my 9 month old, 4 yr old, and 6 yr old. So I was busy real quick. I had gas pains and YES!! walking does help with the gas pains. The faster you get up and move the faster you feel better. Strangest thing during first week: the growling after I had ate. The bottom stomach would be growling even though I had ate. Strange.

The head hunger was the worst. I never realized how much food is advertised till I couldn't have it. When I had my surgery is 4/03 Burger King came out with that ChEEEEZZZ BURRRRGERRRR commericial, and my kids loved it and walked around saying that. I would've killed to eat one. One thing I found that helped with the head hunger was crunching on Sonic ice. It was liquid but I still got to chew. I guess it tricked my mind into thinking I was eating sommething. Also a good way to get in your Water. I would stop by Sonic and get a Route 44 ice Water (43cents) and drinl it all and refill the cup at the water faucet at work. Made it easy to get it all in.

Good luck to everyone having surgery!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
