Failed Barium Swallow Test

Recommended Posts

I had my band put in on 4/2/12. Spent the night in hospital after procedure which was expected. Every thing seemd to be well. I was up walking around the hospital etc. My trouble began at 8:00 am when I was taken for the swallow test. The doctor who performed test said nothing went threw and I failed the test. That was the start of three days of misery. My surgeon said it was swelling from the surgery that caused the band to be constricted. He advised to give it several days to see if the swelling went down. For the next several days I was misreable. Salvia etc could not pass threw stomach and would almost come back up like a dry heave every ten minutes or so, I had the hicups for hours at a time. No Water or food for the entire time not even ice chips. Very bad experience, Finally a second surgey was done on 4/5/12 to re arrange things and I am like a new man. The doctor is back on my christmas card list.Has anyone else had this problem. Would not wish it on anyone. Best of luck to you all.

Kevin

PS dont mean to scare anyone but just make you aware of what can happen, but dont be to worried the surgeon said its rare and only happens to 1 out of 200 people or so. Whis I had the same luck in the lottery...LOL

Sorry to hear you had such a bad time. Hopefully you have gotten all of your share of problems out of the way so the rest of the journey with the band will be smooth.

So, did your band slip right after surgery? I am sorry you went through all that, but am curious to know what was the cause of it.

Hi Guys and Girls. Want to thank you all for wishing me well its much appreciated. Cocabean to answer your question the way the doctor explained it to me that it never slipped but the opening was blocked by my internal fat that swelled up around the opening into the stomach. I see you have made great progree congrats. Hope that answers your question

Thank you for the explanation. That sounds very painful. I am happy you are feeling better.

I just like to know why people have to go back to the OR so soon after surgery. Here's hoping it's a speedy recovery for you from now on!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
