Getting Insurance To Approve Me!

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. My insurance said they do not cover the lapband. How do I get them to approve it? Any tips on secrets or anything I can do?

Oh and I have BCBS of FL

I would begin by asking for their policy on bariatric surgery coverage in writing. Some insurance companies will flat out tell you it is not covered but in print it may indicate medical necessity needs to be shown. Most insurance companies want proof of past weight loss attempts.

Also, have you already been in contact with a surgeon? If so typically he/she would have someone working for them who is familiar with the inner workings of insurance companies and can be your strongest advocate.

I agree with Jim 1967. You need to read your policy I had to fight my insurance as they denied, for no reason, on orginal submittal. I work in insurance (not health) and am VERY familiar with policy language and my right as an insured. So on my denial, I got my policy and then started making phone calls. In less than a week I had an approval and an apology (over the phone) from my insurance. As Jim stated, somone at your surgeons office can help with this too. You may be able to get help from your states dept of insurance as well. You can find their info online. However, I would start with your policy first.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
