1 Year And Counting, Loss Of Momentum And Confidence

Recommended Posts

I am new to the site, but looking for support and advice. I recieved the lap band in January of 2011. My initial weight was 289, and I was down to 246 about 2 months ago. Recently started to gain weight, and am feeling lost. My surgeon is now no longer in the area, and I have difficulty communicating with new folks. I have had 6 fills in the last year, and ultimately felt too tight and was unable to even hold down liquids. I have not had an adjustment for 3 months, but I am still having difficulty with eating, and feel like I am making poor food choices. What are my best resources? Should I find a new doctor, and lay out my issues, or is it better to talk to a nutritionist?? Anyone else stuck and treading Water? ?

definitley you need to find a new lapband dr. If you are having difficulty eating then you prob need a slight unfill. And yes, I am stuck at the same weight for awhile now!

Yes to finding a new Dr and laying out your issues. The bariatric clininc that I go to has a support group meeting every month and I love that. Look around and see if there is a support group nearby. It has been drilled into my head since the very beginning, lean Protein, then veg, then fruit. Try to have at least 3oz of protein per meal. Supplement with a low carb Protein Shake. I am down 34 pounds in 3.5 months and really just starting to really get into the weight loss, I have found my groove. I hope you find yours and get your momentum and confidence back.

I definitely think you should find a new lap band doctor, having a good doctor gives you reinsurance and the knowledge you need to get through certain obstacles. As for the slight weight gain, everyone hits a plateau sometime during their lap band journey, the only way to continue on your journey is to push through and continue trying. I wish you all the best, good luck!

Amen! I feel so blessed that by some stroke of dumb luck I got a fabulous, supportive, listening and talented medical team with very little looking. I could not do it without them! You must find that group that makes your journey worthwhile or you will get discouraged.

There is nothing wrong about looking around and finding that right fit for you.

Good luck!

I found, after a point, that I needed to search harder to find the right adjustment. I got it way too tight and pretty much could not eat anything. had a house full of guests so could not do anything but did lose 3 pounds that week. they took out 1/2 ML of Fluid and it is close but still a wee bit too tight. I think from my view, once you get the band right, the results will follow. Yes, you can't cheat with candy, and ice cream. If you are doing that, you are on the wrong track. You definitely need a surgeon and support staff and likely someone to help with diet choices. But having the band at the right tightness will limit you to 1/2 cup of food at a time and if you avoid the bad stuff (anything with sugar - no sodas, no ice cream, no Cookies, no candy), unless you eat 15 times a day, you will lose. Get back on track, get professional help (you have to have help to do the adjustments) and things should improve. I was adjusted 7/15/11 and am down from 260 to 202 now. Yes, there have been a few hurdles and now i do have some problems with reflux when I lay down but on the whole, I love it.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
