16 Days Post-Op And Weight Isn't Moving...

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

Today I am 16 days post-op and I physically feel great. I am hungry- a lot more hungry now. And that is difficult. My first fill isn't until February 28th so I have another month to go.

I'm also 21 days "sober" (as I joke) from soda. Pre-surgery I drank around 3 cans a day and I'm off completely. I'm in the puree stage and eating considerably less than pre-surgery.

The first week of surgery I lost 15 pounds. It was incredible. After day 8 I've been stuck at the same number. I know I shouldn't be so concerned about the number, but it is frustrating.

Anyone else experience this or have any advice?

Thanks!

Initial weight loss is glycogen, easily accessible, Water soluble fat. It is designed for the body's quick response to physical danger or, in the case of strict diet, the danger of famine/ malnourishment. After a couple of weeks, the body realises that this is not a short term thing, food intake is not going to increase. So the body needs to replenish the glycogen store, ready for the next danger.

We store about 2lbs of glycogen but it requires as much as four times its own weight of Water. So your body is busily restoring what amounts to up to 8lbs of water and fat. So stalling is not surprising! Neither is a gain at this stage.

Don't worry about your numbers for now, this is the time for your body too heal. However, Kate was right about your body reacting to being in starvation mode. Try increasing your calorie intake by 100-200 and see if that helps.

ugh I experienced the same things as you have. I am 5 weeks post op. I lost a considerable amount of weight up front and then all of a sudden it stopped and stalled for about 3 weeks. I just received my second fill and now the weight is starting to very slowly come off again, but its not without hard work. From what people tell me, this is normal. Just try to hang on in there and be patient. It will come off!

Thanks for the encouragement. I am finding this "normal" as I read. I guess I am just wanting a "quick fix"- and like I said, with the HUGE change in diet for me I was expecting bigger results. I have a doctor appointment this week so I shall discuss with him as well!

Don't be hard on yourself. Your body is still healing from surgery and weight loss at this point in time is secondary. Watch your diet and calories and exercise a little and the weight should come off. I tend to lose weight if I maintain my daily calories around 1000 per day. Lower than that and I feel awful, higher than that (around 1500) then I plateau. You just have to find your number and stick with it. Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
