Can Weight Loss Cause Gout? Please Respond With Helpful Input...

Recommended Posts

Ok, new problem I have recently been having. I eat a high Protein diet and very little junk food and recently I have had a few bouts with gout. Atleast thats what I believe it is. I went to my doc and he looked at and said to take antiinflamatory meds and call him if it persist. well its been around a month and i still have pain in my big toe joint. I really hate going to the docs so I have been managing it on my own. Is it likely that my weight loss caould be causing gout? I exercise everyday, drink plenty of Water and have a pretty balanced diet. Any thoughts or ideas from people who have dealt with gout would be appreciated. thanks

Weight loss is supposed to be good for gout but dehydration will increase it. Also, if you really do have gout, you cant eat meat on a daily basis or you are making it worse. Gout meds are just a bandage for the symptoms instead of reducing the purines in the diet and staying well-hydrated.

I am yet to be banded but have suffered gout attacks for years. The attacks were so bad it would leave me unable to walk for sometimes a week or so at a time. About 4 years ago I completely stopped eating ALL meat...finally my gout attacks all but stopped. I do sometimes get small attacks when I eat certain Tomato based products.

I certainly hope getting banded and losing weight would not trigger gout attacks.

It is more likely that the high Protein diet is the culprit not the weight loss.

My husband is 46 days out and got the worst case of gout he has ever had.

Possibly the high Protein. He has been taking Uloric for 2 years and been gout free until now.

So, I have gout, as well.

If it is gout, you have to get on medication. No question about it. Go back to your doctor and have him check your uric acid levels.

Even if you don't get an attack, if your uric acid level is super high, it will do serious joint damage over time.

Weight loss will help a little, but diet is king for prevention. Also, it's not SO much that you have to stay away from meat. It's more that you need to stay away from organ meats. High Protein diets are okay, but I would steer clear of Atkins and diets like that. Cherries are also said to benefit the lowering of uric acid.

If you have any other questions, message me and we'll talk more about it. :)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
