Just getting started and scared

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am just getting started with all of my appointments and going through everything to get banded. I am scared to be a 25 year old female weighing in at 312 lbs. I suffer from very high blood pressure, sleep disorder and depression. I know I need to do this to get healthy but I am afraid of getting rejected. I am one of those that is just coming to terms with my weight, I used to be like im not that big, oh I feel like ive lost some, or I can still fit in those clothes so I wont get rid of them yet (when I know they wont even go over my hips). I finally looked at myself in the mirror when I was put on blood pressure meds and thyroid meds and told myself I was way to big and heavy and needing to get this in order. I would love any advice and encouragement from anyone who is going through the same things or has already been banded. Thank you for reading.

I would recommend reading the book titled Band Wagon. It's an easy read, very insightful and really gives you someone's personal journey from the point you're at now all the way through pre-op, post-op, life with the band, etc. I didn't get the book til after my surgery but I found it very helpful and I really learned some things even though I did a ton of research prior to having my surgery. She's funny too so that make the book fun to read. I think this book will help answer some of your questions and it give you a road map of what to expect. Good Luck!

I would love any advice and encouragement from anyone who is going through the same things or has already been banded. Thank you for reading.

My dear, I was 23 years old (now 24) when I had my band surgery. At my heaviest I was 375-380 lbs. I have been banded for less then a year and was scared to death. Not only of the whole "surgery" thing but because I have a history of blood clots. I have been married for 2.5 years to the one and only person that I would allow myself to really open up to and allow in. I was always one of the cool girls who the boys never thought of me as more then a good friend.

I'm going to be 3 months along with my pregnancy on Friday. I attribute this to my surgery. I didn't think I could get pregnant. I always had irregular cycles or non at all for upwards towards 9 months! I wouldn't change a thing and though I cannot use my band it is allowing me to move on with things I never thought I could like a family. I am currently 338 lbs, a lot better then where I was AND I am pregnant. No fills because I got pregnant before so and it's not recommended to have Fluid when pregnant. E-mail me anytime, I would be happy to talk and share my experience.

Best of luck and hope to hear from you soon!

Heather

Just make sure you follow what you are told, There will be very scary OMG why can't I stop hiccupping is my tummy gonna burst moments early on when you call your doc to learn that if you just eat a gas x which you will be scared to eat it will all be ok

It is a process. The best advice I can give you is to listen to your doctor! Buy an set of small forks and spoons and eat with those. I did that for years after and then once I was skinny mini I let it slide. Now I am in the hospital hoping and praying my health is going to be ok and I have not damaged my band.

Good luck to you and if I can offer you any advice support or you simply need an ear please send me a PM. I will be happy to help. I wish I had stayed around here when I first had the surgery. But I am back now! Hoping a newbie can learn what to do right from what I did wrong.

Change is always scary, but this is gonna be a good change for you! Just do your tests and do your research and everything should be fine. Most things worth having you have to work for and being fit is one that you have to do on your own. Come here for advice and encouragement. But find you a WLS support group meeting and go to them in person support is very important and you can go before being banded and after being banded. You might meet you a band buddy to help you through the process. message me if I can help.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
