Week 2....Lap Band No 2

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I am very excited to have found, what appears to be, a really good chat forum for people like us lol

I had my initial lap banding on August 15th, 2011.

My Pre - Opti Fast Weight was 118.9kg.

My surgery went really well and I was home by lunch time the following day.

However, 4 days later I got a stomach bug and began vomiting....many times. Although this didn't seem to cause any initial issues, I awoke at about 3am the next morning with horrific right shoulder pain!!!

I am not generally referred to as 'soft' but was walking around in tears. Of course, the conclusion was that I was having a bad case of the gas pain from the surgery.

So, I took Tramadol and Ibuprofen (am allergic to Codeine) for the next 3 days until I went back to see the surgeon for my Week 1 Check.

Week One Check

The Dr advised me that it did sound like 'Gas Pain' and wrote me another script for Tramadol.

Week One Weight = 109.4

I was floored to see that I had lost 9.5kg in just 3 weeks!!!

The following weekend my partner and I headed to Melbourne for the weekend for his sisters 50Th. Luckily for me, still in stupid amounts of pain, my brother in law is a surgeon in Melbourne and after much discussions and phone calls to my surgeon in Adelaide, I was given a script for Morphine and an appt with my surgeon as soon as I got back to Adelaide.

Seeing The Surgeon

The Surgeon sent me straight in to get Blood Tests and Ultrasounds and Scans, which revealed that the and had completely slipped and part of my stomach had come up through the band.

This was definitely caused on Day 4 when I was vomiting!!!! So I am not a sook!! LOL.

The placement of the band had gone from sitting nicely in a horizontal position with a pouch of approx an egg size, to the band sitting completely vertical and with the amount of pressure put on it from the vomiting, I ended up with a pouch about the size of a grapefruit!!!!

There were concerns that there could have been damage to stomach, and that it could move more and block off my oesophagus completely!!!

So, surgery was arranged for Tuesday 20th September. There was a high risk of stomach damage and that meant that the band would have to be removed, for now, while I healed....that was my worst case scenario.

Surgery - Take 2

I was a lot more nervous the 2nd time around....More so the fear of waking up with the band gone!!!

It had taken me about 5 years to finally have this done, and with the scales already giving me amazing results, having it removed was not an option I told the surgeon lol.

I woke up so much sorer the 2nd time, but they used the same key holes as the first time and I needed to re heal internally again as well - Dr said this was to be expected!

My Weight Today 30.09.2011 = 101.9 - Total lost, So Far = 17kg.

Regrets = NONE.

If anyone else has been through anything similar or wants to chat .... I am happy to share anything that may your journey easier.

I am loving this!!!!!

Have a great day.

Cheers,

Deb.

Are you feeling less sore. It gets better everyday. The last thing I could do with no pain was sneeze. When are you able to have soft food? I was lucky because my Dr. let me have soft foods 3 days after sugery and then 2 days after that I was able to eat whatever I could tolerate. I probably went slower than that just to be cautious. Take it slow and just heal for now. Best of luck to you!

Hello Deb,

Glad to hear things are improving for you! My band is currently slipped and I will have a surgery to reposition it as well as fix the stomach pouching/hernia. How is your recovery going the 2nd time around? I don't regret my band, either. I am down 50# since I strated this journey and feel and look so much better!

Joan

Hi Joan,

It will be 2 weeks tomorrow since my second surgery, and although the healing time was a little longer this time than the first time, I am feeling really good now!

Have you been getting the intense shoulder pain from the band slipping?

My surgeon used the same incisions as the 1st time, so it seems a bit sorer initially but I am able to sleep on my stomach again, so sleep is amazing again lol.

When are you scheduled to have yours re positioned?

Where are you Joan?

Glad you're feeling good! How long did you take off work?

I haven't had any shoulder pain but for a few weeks I had intense stomach pains in the evenings.

My surgery is scheduled for December 8th. My initial lap band was placed December 2, 2011.

I live in New Mexico. Where do you live?

Joan

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
