long term w/ the lap band???

Recommended Posts

I had the lap band put in a few days ago after wanting this for so long. However, now I am thinking more and more and its getting me scared. I'm having doubts and concerns. Am I always going to "feel" the band in me? Will I be able to eat solid foods? Is it bad to throw up? Can I get pregnant? Will I be able to live my whole life without this band negatively affecting me? Please please someone answer my questions

You've wanted the lap band for so long? Why? Did you do any research? Did you have any clue as to the workings of the tool before deciding that you wanted it?

Am I always going to "feel" the band in me? You cannot "feel" the band inside of you. You may feel the port but you will never feel the band. The nerve endings of the stomach are not the same as those of the skin. While you can feel pain from injury or disease the stomach cannot feel something simply touching it.

Will you be able to eat solid foods? Depending on your doctor, you will be on a liquid diet for 2-4 weeks. After that, you will gradually add solid foods and will eventually be able to eat most things that you ate before just less of them.

Is it bad to throw up? Yes. Throwing up can cause your band to slip.

Can I get pregnant? Could you get pregnant before? The band will not change that. If anything weight lose will make getting pregnant more likely. You may have to have Fluid removed during pregnancy so that the baby can get the proper nutrition.

Will I be able to live my whole life without this band negatively affecting me? As long as you follow the rules and respect your band it will affect your life positively.

You've wanted the lap band for so long? Me too and I am down 80 - 84lbs depending on the day and 2 years out, no problems really. I do not regret it at all.

Am I always going to "feel" the band in me? I agree I DO NOT believe anyone can feel the band. If they think they do they should talk to their surgeon and he will help probably recommend that person seek counseling. Now the port is a different story. I could feel mine in the beginning and now you really can. But I do not feel it from inside my body only if I touch it on the outside of my body. But it makes it easier to get fills. My Granddaughter always wants to feel it

Will you be able to eat solid foods? After you go through the first month or 6 weeks you will be eating solid foods as you advance there will be some foods you might not be able to eat. Everyone is different. Some are very limited in what they can eat and some are not. I think people could probably eat whatever if they went very slowly and chewed alot. You are not going to feel deprived as there are many many foods you can eat.

Is it bad to throw up? I also agree with this but I have vomited on and off since I got the band. One time so much I busted a blood vessel. I would say 75% of the time it is my fault not chewing enough or eating something I have no business eating. The other 25% not sure why but my Doctor never saw anything wrong on my fluoros that I had everytime I went in for office visit. I have never had a slip or had to have a total unfill. I had a very small unfill once when I was too tight.

Can I get pregnant? Do not see why not but I think they like you to wait a while maybe even a year. I have a friend that got pregnant with twins at 10 months post opt and she if doing great. Talk to your Dr about this.

Will I be able to live my whole life without this band negatively affecting me? Nobody can tell what the future holds for any of us. Like the last poster said follow the rules. I plan on having mine till the day I die, and hopefully that won't be for a long time

I think you should stop stressing about everything it is not good for you. Anything you are not sure of call your Dr. Some people call their Doctor several times a week so they are use to it. My Surgeon was very nice and he would answer any question I ever had. Not sure why some people think they made a mistake right after they had surgery. I woke up the next day and thought I dreamed the whole thing and had to pull up PJs to see if I had scars. Was so happy I did. Just tell yourself you are up for whatever comes your way! You made the right choice I bet. Hang in there and stop doubting yourself. It is done now so just go with it. food is just food, but skinny is great! Send me a message if you ever have a question you can not find an answer to and I will help you find it.

remember that the band is a tool to help you get from a-z and help keep you there. I also had some of the same questios. I am almost 2 mts into it and I got scared also. My fears went away the more I healed. Keep a good support system and "stay of of your head". Your new life will be totally worth it!!! Good luck.

Thank you all. And yes cindy I did more research humanly possible actually. And I had more of a clue to what it was all about. However I had some questions that just came to my attention,as anyone would after a surgery. And let me re word this.. Could I go through pregnancy with the lap band in me. Obviously now I know the answer. And why did I want the lap band for so long? I think everyone has their own reasons.

I too could 'feel' my band for about the first month after surgery. It FREAKED me out. I thought I couldnt live the rest of my life with this feeling. But it is completely gone now. I am five weeks post op today. I think it must have been postop swelling. I am hopeful for u . I think u will be fine in time. I am a worry wart and empathize with u.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
