My work just changed insurance. Our previous insurance specifically prohibited WLS and any complications resulting from same. We now have new insurance and I find myself afraid to call. I am not normally a denial kind of person...if I don't hear/see it isn't real. I am just worried that if I hear that nothing is changes, I will give up. I have finally decided to take some control and I dont know if I will stick to it if the insurance won't help. The idea of saving $10,000 plus dollars is very daunting.

When my office changed insurances, I went from having to do a ton of things to get approved to only needing a BMI of 40! You might get lucky, try!!

If you don't want to talk to a "real person" ask for a copy of your new insurance policy. It may be listed in the "covered" items.

I am a self pay as my BMI was too low for coverage. It's a tough decision to pay that kind of money. I rationalized that eventually I would spend that money dealing with complications of being overweight. It is truly an investment for my future and my health.

Good luck.

Thanks for all of the advice. I think I have been afraid to call because I learned early on not to want anything too badly. Another example of things learned in childhood that are hurting me now; I am applying the attitude of a five year old to the needs of a fifty six year old adult. I had to smile when I read that...time to grow up. I will call tomorrow. I think I am going to hanging out on this forum a lot. It is helping me see myself more clearly.

I went through the whole pre op testing/insurance debacle 5 years ago only to learn my insurace did not cover WLS for anyone! I was so discouraged - gained another 40 lbs-aged another 5 years (53 years old now) and decided in May to bite tne bullet and just pay for thr surgery. I had my surgery June 27 and haven't looked back, only wish I would have done it years ago! So CALL!!!!!!

Spell check ate my post. Weird

I called the new insurance, Kaiser Permanente, WLS including the band, is covered with a 10% co insurance. They have a contract with a specific hospital which is at least an hour away. It is a center of excellence so I can live with that distance.

I called and it wasn't bad news. I am amazed. Thanks for all of the support and good wishes.

Great News Robbie. Just remember to put one foot in front of each other and you will be on the path to good health and Lap Band Health.

So happy that you are covered . I too was like you afraid to call but bit the bullet and called. I'm getting my Lap Band tomorrow at 11am.

Best of luck to you.

Mary

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
