Lap Band and low carb dieting

Recommended Posts

Is anyone doing low carb dieting pursuing lap band? Or have had lap band and currently doing low carb? I have been doing low carb for the past 6 weeks and have lost a considerable amount of weight. I would like to continue low carb, but not sure how this will work with the lap band.

Why wouldn't it work with the band? I did low carb for the first 7-8 months, lost flawlessly but now I eat carbs.

I do low carb and I don't know why you would think it wouldn't work with the lapband. With the band, our food choices should be protein-focused which fits nicely with the low carb lifestyle.

What about Atkins? There approach is high fat, moderate Protein, low carb? Im not sure about the high fat part of Atkins. Im also unsure if I will be able to tolerate meats. Has anyone had problems digesting certain meats?

Low carb works very well with the band. I stay under 100g of carbs a day, so not low enough for ketosis, but low enough to curb cravings and to help me get weight off. Generally bandsters are told to avoid carbs anyway, so it's not too different than what my nutritionist recommended. Some people have problems with certain meats... I'm almost 3 months out and haven't had problems with any food yet.

As for the "high fat" portion of Atkins, well, I guess you'd have to speak to a nutritionist. I find I eat less fats now since I'm no longer using bread and Pasta as a fat delivery vehicle.

My doctors office has me on a strict low carb diet. I consume under 20 grams of carbs a day and roughly 50 - 60 grams of Protein. If you are going to do low carbs with the lapband just make better decisions about your protein choices, like lean meats instead of bacon :-) And there is no rule that you have to do high fat while doing low carb.

My doc only permits high Protein, low carb. He only Allows carbs in the form of fruits, dairy, and veggies for the first 6 mos. You then are encouraged to only have high Fiber grains. This is working great for my

diabetes.

So interesting. My doc's said (and he's a successful bandster) is: work with the band (follow the rules - chew, Protein first, followed by veggies, no Water during meal, etc) - be less concerned about calories, fat and carbs and more concerned about waiting for the band, following the signals ... well see ... I've yet to be banded but my doc looks great !

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
