I would like to know the amount of pain on a scale of 1 to 10 you suffered in the Recovery Room after your lap band surgery. 1 being the least amount of pain and 10 being the worst amount of pain. Did the pain medicine(s) which were given to you immediately after surgery work? Where on your body was the pain located?

ok this is a loaded question because everyone's pain tolerance is different. I AM A BIG BABY!!! i wanted to kill the nurse when she made me get up and do my walks. it would have been better if i didnt have to sit back down. the up/down was killing me. i'd say mine was a 10!!!! at the port site. i thought my insides were gonna fall out. my surgery was out patient so i went home that day. my experience may be a little dramatic, I'M A DRAMA QUEEN! LOL! but the good news is by day 4 it was a 3...lol

I just had my surgery this morning. In recovery I was about a level 5 and they gave me extra morphine for the ride home. That brought the pain down to a 2.

Once home I slept off the morphine and woke up in about a 7 pain level, mostly to my left shoulder and upper back.

I took the liquid lortab, slept again, and now 3 hrs after my pain level is about a 5, but I have to wait 3 more hours before I can re dose.

Pain to the shoulder is getting slightly better but now my tummy feels like its been run over.

I also had a hernia repair, so I don't know how much of a difference that makes with pain levels.

Oh, and I usually have a medium threshold with pain.

Pain level was probably at a 7 max. I had it done Monday afternoon.

Like someone else said everyone's pain level is different. I have a high tolerance for pain. After surgery I was about a 5- I assume since they gave me pain meds ASAP .. Went home took 1/2 the dose of pain meds every 4 hours -slept pretty much all day level was about a 5 all day when meds would wear off. Day 2 level 3/ Day 3 did not take any pain meds level 1 when moved side to side ... it was a easy process for me

I was at a 8-9 pain level immediately after surgery. They gave me some pain meds but the worst part was the nausea which they gave me something for that too. Phrenigan which 5 minutes later, forced me to throw up but after that I was fine still in a bit of pain but the pain is gradually going down. I am not relying that much on my pain meds and this is day 5 post op. I had only one dose of pain meds today and my pain level has gone from 2-3 but it's going down.

I have a low threshold for pain.

When I woke up in recovery my first thought was "I'm aive!" then my next thought was that I was in a lot of pain.

They woudn't take me to my room until the pain was managed. They really worked with me to increase the pain meds (morphine) which helped. But I was thinking this procedure is NOT reversable because I couldn't imagine gong through this pain again.

I had the pump and used it all night which hinders the ability to really get up and walk around a lot, plus the pains meds make you sick. 24 hours later I was feeling so much better and had no trouble sleeping (with the help of pain meds). Within 2 days I wasn't taking pain meds and was feeling good. I had no gas pains at all.

I woke up sobbing. Part of it was due to feelings of "oh my god, did i actually do this?" and most of it was due to massive pain. I was given medicine right away, but I continued to sob. I think I was just incredibly emotional. Two hours later I was made to get up to walk. I'd say that was about a 5 out of 10 on pain. Varied from 4 to 6 over the next 4 days and then hung out around 3-4 for the next 3 days. After that, it was fine. But that's just me!

I would say that my pain was a five immediately upon waking and they gave me something fast. I was probably at a three driving home. I only used the liquid Lortab for the day after surgery, used liquid Tylenol the next day and didn't need anything after that. I was surprised at how minimal it was because I put bandaids on papercuts! I'm usually pretty wimpy but I felt really positive about the surgery and I think the positive attitude really helped me.

It's interesting to see the responses...in the recovery room I was at maybe at a 4 or 5. My surgeon requires an overnight stay and they attached a morphine pump to my IV. During the rest of the day and overnight I think I used it about 5 or 6 times (the nurse even commented that I hardly used any of the medication). When I got home the next day, I was about a 3. I used the pain meds each of the first 2 nights to help me get comfortable to go to sleep but that was all.

I never thought about it, but I guess I have a high pain threshold.

I have a very high pain tolerance due to nerve damage from an accident when younger and my surgery was out patient. I was around a 4 of dull ache after I woke up. They gave me one dose of pain meds and since opiates do nothing for me I didn't get pain medication for recovery. I took acetaminophen with caffiene and codeine for two days after just to dull the dull pain. The gas pain was dull and never ending, lasted four weeks, walking and a moist hot pack helps that (read my gallbladder post for more info on why and what you can ask your surgeon to do to limit gas pain). Nausea was bad, they gave me a patch before surgery that was good for 48 hours.

By day four I was almost normal.

Now, after gallbladder surgery - and gallbladder attack pain was a 10 for me and had me at the ER - the pain was around a 7-9 due to nerve damage and gas pain. Hydrocodone made me tired did nothing for pain. Breathing was hard. Back pain, shoulder, lower abdomen, upper abdomen (and it was done via lap like lap band), and now at day five I'm having nerve regeneration pains that feel like a white hit poker stabbing me around two inches from my main navel incision. Pain goes from 0-10 in a split second.

So it differs depending on the pain type. The best thing you can do for your body is to sleep the first 48 hours and let your body heal. There's a reason they use coma for healing. Your body doesn't heal well when you're awake and using it.

When I woke up from surgery my pain was at a level 8 out of 10. I am a wimp and have a low threshold for pain. The recovery room nurse immediately pumped something into my IV (I'm assuming morephine) and I was fine within minutes. I slept for about 2 hours, woke up with nausea which they gave me something for, which in turn gave me a HUGE headache. The pain when I woke from surgery was in my whole abdominal area. When I woke up later I was in barely any pain except for my throat from the tube during surgery. For the two days after surgery my pain was about a 2 only when getting up & down and I was able to ease that with just some liquid tylenol. Day 3 post-op did not need pain meds anymore at all. Only pain that was left was in my shoulder from the air they pump you with during surgery.

here's my reply....I'm 8 months out and I don't remember...so it couldn't have been that bad!! All I know is....IT WAS WORTH ANY AMOUNT OF PAIN!!!

I hope these replys don't scare you... just tell the recovery nurse and I'm sure they can give you something for the pain...

I had my surgery on Tuesday and in recovery pain ranged from 3-6 and was given morphine which worked right away. Most of the pain was over the port but the doctor told me I had a fairly large hiatal hernia repair as well so I assume that is also painful. I think the most pain came from moving onto another bed and getting up walking was fine. Wednesday at home was painful took my pain med every 4 hours walked and walked to get out the gas pain. Slept on my side last night and that was awesome I could feel the gas finally moving around and out, Today I feel good took a shower only pain med was this morning and got a protein drink down. What a difference a day makes.

I have an extremely high pain tolerance after having been in chronic back pain for years (which is a lot less now, by the way); actually the lapband was my trade off for back surgery. If I could lose enough weight to take pressure off my back then I won't have to get back surgery... I'm almost out of the woods at this point! Woot.

Anyhoo... when I first woke up, my pain was a 5; and they gave me some toradol, which brought it down to a 2; and that's where it was. I have been completely out of pain for about a week and a half, and I'm 3 weeks post-op as of yesterday.
