Has anyone heard of the EndoBarrier?

Right now I think it is still in clinical trials and doesn't have FDA approval. It is a sleeve made of some material (probably a kind of plastic) that a doctor puts in your small intestines and it blocks absorption of nutrients in the duodenum.

I really hope that one works out, because that is another fairly safe tool for bariatric weight control. In a way you'd assume an endoluminal sleeve combined with a lap band would give the benefits of a roux-en-Y bypass surgery but it would be reversible and have a far lower mortality rate. I have no idea if the surgeries can be combined though, or if you'd even need to do both. The clinical study said a loss of about 19% of excess weight in the first 3 months, but I've also read a 30% drop of excess weight in 6 months, and that can be doubled with something called a flow restrictor to adjust gastric emptying into the intestines (most of the info comes from sites tied to the maker, so no idea how independent they are).

But if I ever do decide to do something for my weight, I want it to be something relatively safe, reversible and affordable. The lap band seems the best idea now but an endoluminal sleeve could be a good idea too when it gets FDA approval.

hmmmm interesting... followed the links. smile.gif

Let me know when they actually invent something that will let me eat what I want, when I want and still lose weight! That won't rely on my extreme willpower and gruelling exercising regime and won't seem to work for a while but then the weight starts creeping back on.

OR something that really does take away hunger. rolleyes.gif

Now that I'd be excited about. biggrin.gif

I would sure like to talk to someone who has had this. I am exploring non surgical, or less invasive type procedures and am very interested in Endobarrier. It is being used in Australia and Europe now, and is being tested here in the USA. if any of you are interested, and have not taken the surgery step yet, you can sign up for the trials now. This looks to be quite a safe procedure, and also is being used to stave off Type 2 Diabetes. Unfortunately, there are no trials near me, and I even investigated costs of flying to LA to the nearest hospital for me, but it wasn't financially feasible.

If you have had this, please reply to how it worked out for you?

best,

triss in utah

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
