Lap Band Removed Still cant eat HELP!!!

Recommended Posts

I was banded August 2010. Everything went fine i could still eat everything i wanted to after surgery just small portions. It seemed like the band was working perfect. Then one day I got too ambitious and ate some roasted chicken with a couple of bites too big to pass so it got stuck. I went to er and eventually threw it up and didnt have any problems with it after it came up. Dr completely unfilled band because esopahgus and tissue around band was very enflamed from vomiting. Then a few deays later i started to realize I couldnt eat anything, i was having extreme heartburn and throwing everything up. Went to hospital multiple times telling them I couldnt eat and was feeling sick and they diagnosed with a hiatal hernia and acid reflux. It got so bad I had to go to er and have band removed. I had that done 10 days ago and surgeon said surgery went fine with not too much scar tissue but couldnt fix hernia while she was in there because there was scar tissue around it and she didnt want to cut into my stomach or esophagus. Now when I had it taken out it felt like some of the pressure went away but only problem is that I STILL cant eat anything heavier than pudding. Even that comes up and so does most liquids. Did anyone have band taken out and just leave it alone? If so how long until you could eat food after you had band removed? Im suppoesed to be going to vegas in 2 weeks so i want to be healthy and ok to fly and especially be able to eat something. anyone have any suggestions> Dr just said to give it more time and that eventually I should be able to eat something

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
