HELP!! Wondering if anyone else had this pain? Migrating port??

Recommended Posts

Hello all!!

So here is the story. I was banded on May 11th 2011. Everything has been going great, about a week out of surgery I had no pain. I was walking daily and feeling really good. Then last tuesday, day 13 post op, I decided to try a Zumba class and about 30 minutes in to the class I started to feel this burning pain about 4-6 inches, directly above my belly button. I stopped doing the class and I figured I would just rest and see what happened. I was hoping that after a few days It would stop hurting, but actually it slowly started to hurt more and more. The pain is not very bad when I am laying down, sitting, or slowly walking, but when I bend down to sit or pick something up I get a very sharp, burning pain, that takes my breath away.

When I lay down I feel a small lump in the area that I feel this pain. I do not know where my port and I wonder if my port has migrated or if that is where is is suppose to be. From what I have read I always thought that the port where off to the right side or left side and I remember my doctor saying that he usually put the port on the right side. I do not have a incision in this area, the closes incision is about 2 inches above the pain.

I called the nurses line on friday and never heard back, so I just blew it off, but I am a little worried because I go back to work on Monday and I have a very physical job, and my co worker do not know that I had this surgery, I am not sure if I can do my job with this pain.

Thank you for any advise!

You should not have been trying a Zumba class or any other form of strenuous exercise so soon after surgery - didn't your Dr tell you that?

You have probably pulled some of the stitches that are securing your port to the muscle. This may or may not affect your ability to be able to get fills in the future - depends on how badly you have torn it and what position it is now in. I would go back to the Dr and let him/her check that everything is OK. Different Drs put ports in different places.

If you have a very physical job you need to make sure that your Dr is happy to clear you for that or you could have problems.

Go back and see your Dr and do not do any kind of extreme exercise for the recommended period to make sure that you heal properley. For now stick with the walking.

Good luck , I hope everything is OK.

I had the same type of pain for like four days. Burning in the side of my stomach. I pulled stitches and my port moved. Had to get a second surgery to have it reattached. I went to get my first fill after my second surgery and they could not find it again. I hope things work out differently for you but that pain sounds so familiar. The only way I could get it to stop was to take ibuprofen. It was definitely stitches coming loose though because after that I could not feel my port. Good luck!!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
