I screwed up! Had solid foods 7 days post op!!!

Recommended Posts

I am so mad at myself! I was banded on 4/28 in Mexico by Dr. Oritz (very good experience) and I have been feeling great all week. Yesterday I completely screwed up and had chicken wild rice Soup with crusty bread for lunch and tomatoes and an avocado for dinner!! Unfortunately it didnt bother me at all. I felt just fine and it tasted like heaven! I have been getting soooo sick of the those Protein Shakes and just fell off the wagon! My husband got upset with me when he saw me eat that dinner - I can't blame him. I Today I read some of your posts about the stomach trying to heal and stitches coming out when you eat solids and I am terrified! What if I did damage my pouch? Would I feel anything if my band slipped. I am back on full liquids today, but I just can't help worrying about the possible damage I might have done. Any advice? Thank you!!

I wouldnt worry too much...you are probably ok - especially if you didnt eat a ton. Just get back on the horse and do the best you can. It will be a long journey but it is worth it. You can do it!

If you're feeling fine today you're probably just fine. Everyone's post-op instructions are different. Just don't do it again :)

Stick to your diet!! I wouldn't worry, but be careful.

The band will never stop you from eating, remember that! It's a diet, full time, if you don't follow it you won't lose weight.

You will definitly know if you band slips. My band slipped after 6 years of having it and had to have emergency to remove it. Trust me...you will know if it slips. Just don't eat so much that you throw up. I get my 2nd band in 2 months. You will be just fine.

Thank you everyone for your comments and encouragement. The only thing I have felt all day after a day of solids yesterday is that the incision around my port feels tingly and numb and I have that same sensation, in the same general area on my back. Maybe I am just hyper vigilant about how my body feels because of my slip-up yesterday, but I hope it's just part of the healing process.

Also, do you guys add 1/2 a banana to your Protein shakes/yoghurt? It sounds like some of you do, but my manual says no fruits until the pureed stage (1 week from today). Thanks - I am so glad I have found this forum to bounce off ideas and concerns. Hope I'll get to the ticker and picture part on my profile one of these days........

No Fruit! Esp. since your doctor said not to add solids yet. I was not on solids until week 5. I'm not trying to be mean but you need to follow your doctors orders. They are not to punish you but to let your stomach heal.

My doc let me have fruit as long as I pureed everything til it was as smooth as baby food. Hey Don't feel bad about the slip up. I did it too around the same time you did. I put a post up about it Something about why didn't the cheat foods make me sick. You should read it!lol although people was way nicer to you than they was to me. One person was like why did you even bother with getting the band wonk wonk wonk!lol But Don't let anyone even in your home make you feel bad about that. Their not in your bodyand just because you got the band doesn't give someone else the right to be your food police. that will get real annoying fast. But hey you're gonna be at this a long time and I promise you it won't be your 1st slip up. So don't beat yourself up over it too much. Good Luck Girl! I'm sure you're gonna do just fine!

Monika : you should have a look at the new post, listen to your doctor. Dont beat yourself up, what is done is done, and the liquid diet, terrible torture, but that post could maybe motivate you to continu on your liquid diet. It is about someone who did not do the liquid diet after a fill, soon after the band was put in, the band slipped because she got stuck. How horrible hey?

It is soooo tempting to cheat, especially since youdidnt get stuck, but what if you did?

I decided to follow my docs order to the t because i had a weird lump and the er docs believed my port was out of place and that had developed an hernia, 4 days after surgery. I was so sad because the day after surgery, i picked up my nephew not thinking i couldnt pick him up. I put him back on the flooor when i realised it, but that day at the ER when they told me they had to reoperate right away, and me thinking it ws my fault was enough to scare me for years:) thankfully it was a missunderstanding, it was the new place where my surgeon puts the port, and he didnt inform me or the doc at the er, lol

So back to fluids lady:) you can do it, it will be soon over

Best of luck

Monika, glad to hear you are getting back on track! We all make mistakes. Usually the sign of a slipped band is constant vomiting after eating. It can also be sudden loss of restriction, but that would not apply to someone recently banded, I'd think.

Take it from someone 3 years out, if you were to get stuck on something right now (like bread--a notorious item for getting stuck) the reaction of your body would be incredibly painful. Some surgeons put a bit of fill into a band during surgery, so you might have some restriction already.

When we get a piece of food stuck over the stoma (the hole between the pouch and the lower stomach) the pouch tries to grind it to make it go down. It is very painful. You can also get nauseous and vomit. Having new stitches and incisions would make these symptoms all the more painful. Just another set of reasons to stick to your doctor's orders during this immediate post-op phase.

If your surgeon said no fruit until the pureed stage, then bananas are out. One of the first foods I got stuck on was a banana. I didn't blend it, but still. I say wait until you can have them.

Great comments and advice. Thank you - you guys are wonderful! Been doing well with my liquid, no bananas, even though I loath it! Was my son's 14th birthday party today with Chinese food and cake and I had a bowl of butternut creamed Soup. Mushy/pureed phase on Thursday....yeahhhh!!

You probably should take it a little bit easy with the food, especially at the beginning. Generally, I think as long as you chew anything enough, you should be okay.

Hmmm think I'll try it with strawberry sometime too. I think they said greek yogurt because I notice its not as much sugar in it as reg yogurt.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
