Hi all,

My name is Kim and I am basically just beginning this journey. I have been overweight my entire life with a number of losses and regains. After two years of simply losing and gaining the same twenty pounds, I finally decided to give the lap band a serious look. After lurking here and researching I decided this would be a great way to help me improve my life. Then tonight I went to my information session and now I have more questions than I did before. The statistics presented showed that there is a significantly greater loss with bypass as well as a decreased occurence of co morbidities and weight regain. The doctors also discussed that if you like sweets or don't exercise this surgery will not benefit you, and the weight loss doesn't really begin until 3 months post op due to no restriction prior to fill. While I understand this is a huge lifestyle change, and I do attend the ymca regularly, I am afraid I will revert to my old/current habits and this will all be for not. I have every intention of working hard, I am just scared I will fail with this like I have all my previous diets. Does anybody have any experiences or advice to share? My consult is in two weeks and I want to be better prepared when I meet with my doc. Thanks.

Kim

hey kim! my name is ashley and while I haven't had the surgery yet, i am going next friday and the whole process leading to the surgery is an important time to get you ready for it. I too have been overweight my entire life and had similar issues with giaining and losing. I chose to have the surgery because i know with this i can't cheat after (yes i know i could) but the risks are too high to cheat in my opinion. While i LOVE food and i realize I am a food addict... i know that if i binge or eat something bad for me after it will make me sick. This is how I know I will stick to it. You will see on here lots of people say "cheat once, you won't again!" Now I can't talk from experience but the whole thought of getting sick from eating too much or stuff that is yummy but bad for you makes me want to follow the diet as close as I can.

I am currently on the pre surgical diet of Protein shakes, sf pudding and Jello and yorgurt... it helps to shrink your liver for the surgery and i'm not gonna lie... it's hard but i want this soo bad. I think you need to come to a time in your life that you KNOW you want to change and keep it off (hopefully). I work with someone that had the lap band surgery and she lost like 200 lbs in less then 2 years and she looks awesome. that's how i know it works (And she didn't even exercise)

sorry if i keep rambling but i hope it helped a little at least if you wanna chat more just message me :)

good luck!

Ashley

Ashley, I want to make sure you understand, you said if I eat something bad for me I'll be sick after. No, you won't, unless you eat to much you may feel uncomfortable. If you eat, let's say chocolate, or chips, there will be no consequences. You will not feel sick. Just want to make sure you ate aware of this.

To Kim , as you said you heard at the seminar it is true, if you continue to eat sweets the surgery will not help you, unlike bypass you won't get sick from eating chocolate. In order to be successful you need to change your ways. As for not really losing weight for 3 months, well that is whatever your willpower is. Most people get very hungry shortly after surgery, and need fills to control it. And according to many you may not have restriction for many fills/months after. If you are lucky you can be like me who continues to have restriction right from the surgery. There ate some, I've heard that get by without exercising but I exercise regulary and I think you should.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
