For those that had sleep apnea

Recommended Posts

if you were dx with sleep apnea do you still have it after losing weight? Did you use a cpap mask? How long? Did you have to have another sleep study after a certain amount of time? I just had my pre-surgery sleep study and I am not looking forward to ever having another one! I don't know if I have apnea or not so I really hope not.

One thing I found humorous was on the morning-after survey it asked if I had trouble falling sleep last night and if so, could I think of anything that happened that day that caused me to fall asleep later than usual. I wrote "Yes. I someone put wires all over my face." blink.gif

The sleep technician told me that once i lose 10% of my original body weight, I need to come back to be re-evaluated and my cpap readjusted. Although the doctor gave me a self-regulating cpap. I am embarrassed to say that I haven't used it since surgery on 3/18. The mask is off. I am scheduled to get a new mask on Tuesday. I agree with you. There is nothing comfortable about a sleep study. I had to have three. The first one didn't record anything. The second one did--I had sleep apnea and the third for a night's sleep on the cpap. I sleep very little all three nights.

After losing approx. 50#, I decided one night to not sleep w/mask. I never slept so well & my wife said she did not hear me gasp for air, jump around like a fish out of Water, or snore. Been mask free since & down a total of 80#. I mentioned it to my GP & Bariatric surgeon. Both said "good."

I have also been without my CPAP for about 4 months. Partly because the mask really doesn't fit me anymore and the other reason is that according to my husband - he has not heard me snore or gasp for air like I used to. I know I'm not snoring - I used to wake myself up with snoring. I know I am sleeping good, I feel rested and don't need a nap anymore. At my 6 month check up, the doctor asked me about it and was going to send in another referral for sleep study, but I told him I wasn't really interested in it and was doing fine. He was ok with that decision.

I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that after losing about 50 lbs I stopped using my cpap. I thought I was fine. But after accidentally taking my night meds one morning before work (allergy meds, singulair and Exced p.m.), I found myself stuttering (which is a side effect of sleep apnea when you don't get enough oxygen to the brain). So I had another sleep study in January and I am back on my cpap. The good news is that more and more I don't think that sleep apnea is the cause of my bouts with stuttering. I say this because even with my cpap and the special "pep" pills my doc gave me I am still tired. I have just about decided to see the neurologist again.

I think most people no longer need their cpap after losing weight, and hopefully you won't need one at all!

Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
