Being Sick and Being Banded

Was wondering if anyone on here has experience a chest cold or flu type illness after being banded and if it effected your port? My port was sore 3 days ago and I figured I over did it day before spring cleaning my house. Next day it was still sore. Then yesterday I had the "wont go away and I keep wanting to cough" experience. Today I woke up with fever and body aches. I would think they port isnt related to my lungs and chest cavaty area but honestly my legs are achey from this and they have no relation to my lungs....so I was wondering how everyone else was effected when sick? By the week im a month post op =)

Is your port in your abdomen or chest?

I was lucky and had a cold turn into total inflamation of my respiratory system about ten days after being banded. OMG it hurt to cough with my port in my adbominal area and it had not completely healed yet. All is good now.

You may have overdone it cleaning house and if you are coughing, you are just irritating it. If it really bothers you, give your doctor a call. Hope you are feeling better soon.

I'm just getting over a cold with a cough - when the cough was at it's worst my port area was sore. It hurt everytime I coughed. It felt like I did a SUPER ab work out

HTH

Good luck and hope you're feeling better

that's funny that you posted this! I was sick with bronchitis last week and I had continues cough and my port was so sore but I called my doctor and they said it would be fine and its sore cause we don't use those muscles very much! Its in there snugly so its not going to phase it!

I'm getting over cold/flu/stupid virus right now too and the first I've had with a cough since before surgery in Nov. My abdominal area (including where the port AND the band are) were pretty sore yesterday but that was my worst day of it all. It feels better today and I agree with what mandy's dr said if we don't use those muscles a lot and are hacking up a storm we would be sore in those areas. I think I was also "anticipating" the coughing somehow hurting the band so I was clenching my abs anyway (if that makes sense)! But give your doc a call if you are concerned, and hope you get to feeling better :)

Thank you everyone. I'm on the downhill of this nasty chest cold. My port area hurt really bad day of on set of symptoms and the 1st day of the cold and after the congestion started to break up the port didnt hurt anymore. I guess from the inflammation of me coughing and congestation that it irritated poor lil Bandito somehow ;)

Ahhh to breathe again is nice =) Thanks again!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
